For years, numerous pundits have called for the death of single-player games, and while some of us gnash our teeth at the thought of losing solo experiences, the creep of multiplayer has been undeniable. This is good news for Crytek, a studio that apparently can't wait to be rid of single-player. "I think the notion of a single-player experience has to go away," CEO Cevat Yerli told IGN. "However, I'm not saying that there will be no single-player experiences ... it could be it's called Connected Single-Player or Online Single-Player instead.
Source Yeah... just no... edit:300+ dumbs? This has to be some sort of record for SH.
Of course this comes from the guys with the shit story & campaign :v:
How about no?
Of course this comes from the guys with the shit story & campaign :v:
Most of the MP for their games doesn't seem to be inspired either.
I think you and your boring games need to go away Mr Yerli
Yeah well I sure can do without Crytek's singleplayer games. So can I with their multiplayer titles. Just keep shitting new amazing Cryengines and we'll be fine.
The only reason that anyone would suggest single player going away is so that they can adapt a multiplayer model that nets them greater profit. Fuck them. Games are about more than making money. They are a fantastic bridge between virtually every major artform, whether it is writing or acting or music or visual art. Nothing can do this better than a single-player game, and this notion of moving away from single player games is probably the greatest sign that so many of these companies are far out of touch with the people who actually play video games.
yeaahhh...no we have gems like the walking dead thats " singleplayer only" and yet it has won soo many awards and sold god knows how much But yet this comes from the guy who was in charge of far cry 2 so...
CryMoar
I usually completely ignore the multiplayer in games and only play Single player, so if this ends up happening I will likely be done with games.
Yeah guys come on let's get rid of the single player in games these days look how good call of du- I mean crysis 3's mp is
it could be it's called Connected Single-Player or Online Single-Player instead.
Yeah, sounds like always on DRM. No thanks.
I imagine what he's actually referring to is to get rid of singleplayer campaigns as completely solitary experiences and do things like what Demon's Souls and Dark Souls did where other players sometimes interact with you in one way or another. Something which greatly benefit both games and enriched their worlds with a greater sense of life. There is something to be said for that feeling you get when you approach a bonfire and see another person there struggling through the same hardships as you. Although I'll likely be eating these words when Crysis 4 comes out and it has cooperative campaign only.
This works in SOME games, it doesn't need to be in every game.
Agreed. But I'd rather game developers threw a bunch of shit at the wall and saw what stuck rather than just stagnating in the same place for decades on end.

Oh fuck off.

U, when you die, you see for 2/3 seconds the comments of people on the level They get increasingly hilarious as the difficulty rises
I love how in New Super Mario Bros. U, when you die, you see for 2/3 seconds the comments of people on the level They get increasingly hilarious as the difficulty rises
Now I do wonder how many there are at the classic first hurdle that is the first Goomba.
I'm all for co-op focused games, but to boldly say that the single player gamemode should "go away" is completely unreasonable.
I love how in New Super Mario Bros. U, when you die, you see for 2/3 seconds the comments of people on the level They get increasingly hilarious as the difficulty rises
that sounds funny, but I can't find any videos or mention of this happening anywhere also new super mario bros U looks supremely unoriginal :l
How about reading the article before commenting because it isn't talking about getting rid of single-player campaigns at all.
"However, I'm not saying that there will be no single-player experiences ... it could be it's called Connected Single-Player or Online Single-Player instead. "Online and social can reignite single-player in a new type of context and provide benefits that will make you want to be a part of a connected story-mode rather than a disconnected story-mode. Sure, if the technology forces you to play a traditional single-player game online, that doesn't make sense but if it's offering actual benefits to be online then you want to be part of it."
It's about adding an online component, even if it's minor or purely social. You already have this if you use the Steam Overlay with a single-player game, allowing you to talk to friends for advice or look up guides online. He's not calling for a total end to all single-player experiences which is obvious if you read past the title.
Oh fuck off already. Stop cramming this "Everything has to be multiplayer" shit down our throats.
But I play games to avoid people.
The notion of my boot has to go up Cevat Yerli's ass.
Lost 90% of the respect I had left for you Crytek.
Dark Souls does this perfectly, but it would be terrible if every game tried the same multiplayer mechanics.
Why stop there? Let's start forcing people to read books with eachother, why would anyone even read a book alone?
that's a bit oxymoronic
Don't you guys see the beauty of what this genius is saying? If they do away with single player, then if they feel we are worthy enough to get modding tools we have to only focus on multiplayer. And since yearly installments seem to be the new industry standard, we won't miss it as much when servers are shut down as we all will be playing the newest version. Newer is ALWAYS better! Plus, no singleplayer to wade through means we will have the privilege of paying even more to unlock stuff. Only n3rd n00bs unlock stuff without paying! Seriously, the future is looking bright and this guy clearly is ahead of the curve!! [sp]I seriously almost puked typing all that. Long live singleplayer and this guy is a grade F idiot[/sp]
It would be rather depressing if this were to become standard for all games. Any sense of immersion would go right out the window, which'd be of extreme detriment to horror, stealth and story; even it it were just Dark Souls-esque messages left by other players. Hard enough finding a game that can truly suck me into it's world without having to read dumb shit left by arseholes. Not that i'm under the impression my feces are scentless, either; i'd imagine they'd be equally annoyed by my verbal diarrhoea. I'm probably not part of their target audience anymore, so meh. At least there's alcohol and some good TV shows hidden in a vast sea of shit.
