Hi!
About a month ago, I wondered just how much time I usually spend online, be it for browsing social media and entertainment websites, or actually doing legitimate work. I go on the internet quite a bit, and I felt that it might have been eating away at time that could be used better. Because of this, I thought I would do an experiment:
The premise was to track my internet usage for a month-long period, and try to cut down my usage for the month following it. To track it, I installed the chrome extension Web Timer, which sits at the top right of your screen, and displays the time you've spent on the current site for the current day.
Like so:

Luckily, I just snapped that at 11:59pm. It's now at 0 minutes because of the new day. The Web Timer extension, when you click it, shows a pie chart of your usage for the day, an averaged chart, and your all-time usage.
So for the past month (34 days because I forgot to record it a few days ago), I used the internet regularly and didn't pay attention to the monitor. (By the way, Web Timer has a built-in sharing tool which uploads it to imgur for you!) After 34 days, here was my usage:

88 hours and 45 minutes, holy shit. That's over 3 and a half DAYS spent on the internet (with a small and negligible amount that is idling time).
I noticed that the top 2, reddit and FP, are a huuge timewaster, accounting to around 40% of my total internet time. Note though that I can have these both open at once and still track them, so it makes sense that they're around equal. Facebook and Youtube make up another good chunk, which I totally expected. Other than that, smaller times for sites I frequent sometimes. Wikipedia is probably the only site I actually use for work or gathering information for stuff.
So for the next month, I'm going to attempt to cut down my usage to 44 hours total. I could definitely be using my time on better things (19 and 16 hours for reddit and facepunch respectively is pretty crazy). It never hurts to cut back and start using my time more wisely. I'm going to update this thread in a month with my results!
If any of you want to see how much time you spend, download an app/extension like the one I linked to. It might surprise you!
Oh god, here comes the porn statistics.
your statistics are literally the stereotypical redditor + fp

Same
I wondered how much time I spend on Facebook and shit, thanks OP I'll come back next week
Seeing as facepunch is one of my home tabs I'm sure the amount of time on here is obscene.
I'm installing, i've always wondered how much time i waste.
As a matter of fact, I already installed this thing a few days ago when I saw a rodit post about it.

Chrome only? What a shame.
I'd love to use this but chrome has some weird memory leak issues on W8
I'm gonna try this, could be interesting. I'm pretty sure though it'll just show how many hours of my life I waste on forums and tumblr.
hmm

But it doesn't track Internet usage in video games?
This wouldn't work for me. I usually just leave my browser open even if I'm not using it.

It doesn't track time when there's no activity going on.
I did the same thing but with an app I made in VB and it just timed how long I was on the pc, not on any particular site. I did it over 4 weeks too.

Wasting a day a week on the PC, it really opens your eyes.
oh boy cant wait to see the embarassingly large amount of time wasted on the same handful of websites
My breakdown is like this: 50% FP, 40% Facebook, 5% Imgur, 5% Other
My biggest issue with this experiment is that I don't really browse the web on one device. I use my laptop, desktop, and Nexus 7. Although I guess to be fair, I can add the laptop and desktop together, but my Nexus 7 would be tricky.

you call it a waste, but you can also earn money online. hour work a day and extra 40 dollars every day.

Can't blame him. /tg/ sometimes contains some hilarious shit.

I only logged recreational usage. I didn't use it for work and if I was doing homework / whatever, I would pause the timer
