Here's the latest in the steaming excitement concerning Valve's Source Engine and Steam client coming to Linux. Over the weekend an email was sent in by a Phoronix reader, Joe Davinson, about an email exchange he had with Gabe Newell of Valve. Below is the email screenshot where he says "Yes" to "Will the Linux version of the Steam client be released to the public before the end of this year?" [Valve's Gabe Says "Yes" To Steam Linux This Year] This isn't news at all to me, but unfortunately back when I was in Bellevue they asked me to not comment more specifically on their targeted release schedule, so for now you will just have to wait. But what this email confirms for release plans by end of year is already quite accomodating compared to what I was told. Maybe though Valve will finally provide public Linux comments from the E3 Expo?
[t]http://www.phoronix.net/image.php?id=0x2012&image=valve_linux_steam_show&w=1024[/t] Source
fuck yes that's all I need to say
Normally I'd call bull, but there IS a L4D2 Linux port they've been showing off.
Normally I'd call bull, but there IS a L4D2 Linux port they've been showing off.
Phoronix is also the same site that showed us those pictures and told us there was a Linux client coming.
Phoronix is also the same site that showed us those pictures and told us there was a Linux client coming.
Yeah, but the fact that there was an actual usable Linux binary in the Steam for Mac beta that Phoronix found makes it seem reasonable that Valve would talk to them about it.
Me to Gaben Newell: Are you fat? Gabe Newell: Yes
ITS CONFIRMED GUS!!!!!!

Me to Gaben Newell: Are you fat? Gabe Newell: Yes
ITS CONFIRMED GUS!!!!!!
Old news
Very excited for steam to be coming to Linux. Now I might actually find a better reason to dual boot.
I already dual boot, however seeing the slow progress in PC-To-Mac game conversions I fear I will be unable to give up on Windows any time soon.

Me to Gaben Newell: Are you fat? Gabe Newell: Yes
ITS CONFIRMED GUS!!!!!!
Phoronix is quite well known and legit source. Not to mention they actually presented the L4D2 and Steam running on Linux, they just never gave any release timeframe.

I, for one, have had it with windows. This was the last thing I needed to convince me to switch. [editline]5th June 2012[/editline] Can we really trust the word of VALVe though? [sp]VALVe Time[/sp]
I'm not a fan of Phoronix, especially after the whole 'Steam on Linux 2010'. But this was kind of confirmed somewhere else when they separately emailed Gabe. This is great news.

Maybe EP3 will bee released after Steam is on Linux?
Maybe EP3 will bee released after Steam is on Linux?
Well of course, nobody expects it to be released before Steam is on Linux
All I need to wait for now is for GMod to be compiled for Linux then I'll be formatting my pc!
All I need to wait for now is for GMod to be compiled for Linux then I'll be formatting my pc!
Looks like I'm way ahead of y'all!
I have so many games that only work for windows or mac and I doubt we'll see some of those games ever to be ported to linux so I'm not going to get excited but good for you linux people
I've always wondered how the gaming industry would look like if big-budget games were developed and successful on Linux instead of Windows. No doubt we would be playing BF3 on 500-man servers by now :v:
Phoronix is quite well known and legit source. Not to mention they actually presented the L4D2 and Steam running on Linux, they just never gave any release timeframe.
I'd believe it if it was one of the Phoronix guys asking Gabe, but the article clearly states the screenshot was sent in by one of their readers who could've easily faked it. So no, ths doesn't have much credibility in my eyes. It's still possible that Steam for Linux will actually come out this year though.
"Before the end of the year?" Released December 31st, 11:59 PM
"Before the end of the year?" Released December 31st 2013, 11:59 PM
FTFY Also, as soon as this comes out: Bye windows

Good for the people who use Linux, but I like Windows so I'm gonna stay with it :~) It's great to have choice though, I know Ubuntu on my netbook was a god send when I had it and to be able to chat to friends on it would've been good.
I, for one, have had it with windows. This was the last thing I needed to convince me to switch.
You're still gonna be very limited on what games you can play on Linux.
You're still gonna be very limited on what games you can play on Linux.
But not as limited as before. [editline]5th June 2012[/editline] Plus, it's a huge step seeing a big commercial company like VALVe doing this.
it would be awesome if it comes with Linux builds of Source engine games
it would be awesome if it comes with Linux builds of Source engine games
hopefully, it'll be released with L4D2.
Bye bye Windows. (Finally).
