Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark joined the Global Geopark Network on October 3, 2010. This brings a lot of benefits and opportunities for this land to promote its tourism and service potentials. However, to take advantage of this, which the Geopark in the world, including the Geological Park is the nearest of Malaysia Langkawi is done, requires a lot of efforts.

Unlike other geoparks in the world, Dong Van karst plateau is characterized by geological heritage values, biological heritage values and cultural, historical heritage values. This is a big plus for Dong van to develop tourism activities. Therefore, Ha Giang province has been trying its best to construct, preserve the geopark’s values as well as to create favorable opportunities for tourism-service development.

To seize the opportunity, there has been a lot of investment for Dong Van geopark’s tourism in recent years. Thereby, tourist accommodations are being built and improved from Ha Giang city to Dong Van karst plateau. In particular, many high quality hotels have been chosen by tourists in Yen Minh, Dong Van, Meo Vac,…Also, transport from Hanoi to Ha Giang is improved much and the vehicle quality is better now. In 2011, despite the global economic difficulties, the number of tourists in Ha Giang reached 330 visitors, an increase about 9.5% with respect to 2010. Tourism revenue was estimated at nearly 340 billion, up to 9.1% in comparision with the previous year.
Dong van
In addition to positive signs of tourism growth in Dong Van in recent years, its tourism development has to cope with many challenges. A number of building projects being implemented, have effected the geopark’s architecture and landscape. On Dong Van ancient market street- an attractive destination, it seems to be lost its soul after being moved to another place. Hence, the managers of Dong Van geopark have to consider carefully in order not to cause bad effects on the geopark’s natural landscape.
In a conference on Dong Van karst plateau’s situation, strategic and action plans by 2013, Professor Guy Martini presented his report ratified by him and Global Geopark Network’s members. He recommended that we need to raise people’s awareness, preserve and promote heritage values; eliminate obstacles as well as administrative procedures for tourism development. Plus, traffic safety should be improved more in Dong Van geopark and the roads should not be enlarged. Tourism tours must combine geology with adventure tourism….
