Enjoying your new console? Well, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter thinks it’ll soon be obsolete, and he thinks that Xbox maker Microsoft knows it.
Speaking this morning with moderator Geoff Keighley at our GamesBeat 2014 in San Francisco, Pachter explained why he thought Microsoft would shift its gaming focus from consoles to PCs and mobile.
“I think consoles are going away, because you used to need a console because you could not connect a microprocessor to your TV screen,” Pachter said. “Now, if you have a Chromecast stick or a Roku box, you can. So why do we buy consoles? I mean, your phone will be powerful enough to power any game in two more generations. And, so, why buy a console? I think Microsoft actually knows that.”
These comments come after Microsoft bought Minecraft developer Mojang for $2.5 billion earlier today. Microsoft has always had a lot of success with hardcore gamers, but acquiring the mass-appealing Minecraft — a game that’s especially popular on mobile platforms — could be a sign that the company is looking to reach a wider audience.
Pachter also talked about the middling critical response to Destiny, the recently released first-person shooter/massively multiplayer online game hybrid for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. The PlayStation 4 version currently has a Metacritic score of 76.
“That’s not good enough, I think, to support a recurring franchise,” Pachter said. “They’re going to have to step it up next time.”
Publisher Activison Blizzard spent millions promoting Destiny. The game already had a successful launch, but reviews didn’t start coming out until after the shooter’s release.
Soon, everyone will be PC gaming mustardrace.
What does this mean? are they planning on discontinuing Xbox after xbone?

I just forgot who michael pachter was for a few seconds. nevermind. This is retarded. all that ever comes out of his mouth is stupidly irreverent predictions based on almost nothing and they never come true.
Michael Pachter is irrelevant.

One only needs to take a look at what's inside of the current gen consoles to realize that everyone already is PC gaming master race, they just don't know it yet

Sadly, the games don't work on my PC.
Somebody should try to install Windows on Xbox hardware.

He's entertaining, though.
Didn't Michael Pachter say that PC gaming was dead and everyone would be gaming on consoles a couple of years ago?
Somebody should try to install Windows on Xbox hardware.
It already is. The xbone uses a modified version of windows.
Soon, everyone will be PC gaming mustardrace.
I cannot wait, those people need to fucking understand that those console wars are like the world wars everyone will get tired of it.
When can I finally play some new mario games and halo 3 on my pc?
As much as I love nintendo and having a bootleg nes back in the day. Consoles are obsolete in my eyes, Heck thanks to the dolphin emulator I managed to play through super mario galaxy 1 & 2 with just a keyboard and a mouse.
Somebody should try to install Windows on Xbox hardware.
I'm almost tempted to buy an xbone just to get one of my comp sci major friends to help engineer drivers for this fucking nightmare of an idea.

Yeah it's not like games aren't gonna get more graphically intensive or anything.
The Second Rise of SEGA may soon begin...
Virtual Boy is going to make a return, trust me.
The Second Rise of SEGA may soon begin...
Dreamcast 2 plz with Shenmue 3 as a launch title.
The Second Rise of SEGA may soon begin...
they will save the market whenever it crashes again
i hope
PC gaming mustardrace.
It still does my heart good that PC is so untouchable regarding these things that all anyone could come up with for a spin on its name is just "mustard"
Yeah it's not like games aren't gonna get more graphically intensive or anything.
or like PC is going to get even more massively overpowered compared to phones
why do people think that phones are magically going to compare even slightly in terms of power to pc's
as if PC is just going to fullstop and phones will become more powerful
do they not understand anything or something?
Wasn't this the guy who kept calling the 3DS a financial failure and that Nintendo should make iPhone games?
It still does my heart good that PC is so untouchable regarding these things that all anyone could come up with for a spin on its name is just "mustard"
And it was PC gamers who did it too, since consoles need to ketchup.
Funny thing is knowing Microsoft and our luck they'd go directly for the mobile market.
Dreamcast 2 plz with Shenmue 3 as a launch title.
The next Total War will be exclusive to the Dreamcast 2.
Consoles aren't going anywhere, especially since the PS4 and XBONE were basically just born in terms of general console lifespan. There will always be people that think computers are just "too complicated" for gaming.
I mean that in the way consoles used to be way back in the days of ps2 and xbox. They were simple alternatives for the folks that either didn't want to fuss around with an actual OS, or were just to lazy to, and would rather "put in disk -> play", just like DVD, CD, cassette, vinyl, you-name-it players.
I watch Pach-man sometimes...Everything he says is all supposition, I never really paid much atention to whether or not his industry predictions ever came true.

This makes me a fucking wizard; I predicted the future!
Lol. Phones will be as powerful as consoles in two generations. Yeah. No.
Phones are low power devices. Even though your phone might have more and "faster" cores, and more RAM than a 360. Doesn't mean it's anywhere even near it in terms of powering games. Not even counting how much better a controller is then a touch screen for the most popular console games.
I doubt phones will take over in the realm of high demand computing. I take it there's a reason why you need these big cases with big motherboards and graphics card with lots of power and fans.
I don't see a phone being able to run Battlefield 8 at ultra settings 4k resolution 60 FPS without being permanently plugged into the outlet and burning a hole through the table.

And yet GTAV takes an extra 3 months to get released on Windows...
