http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-25118889
A French pharmaceutical company has warned a morning-after contraceptive pill may be ineffective in heavier women, following a Scottish study. Norlevo, made by HRA Pharma, was less effective in women over 11st 3lb (75kg) and ineffective in women over 12st 8lb (80kg), the study suggested. The US is reviewing guidance as the active ingredient in Norlevo is used in other brands of morning-after pill. It is thought the drug is absorbed by fat, lowering the dose in the blood. The study by the University of Edinburgh in 2011 investigated Norlevo's active ingredient, levonorgestrel. It indicated obese women taking the emergency contraceptive were four times more likely to become pregnant than women taking the drug who were a normal weight. The report's authors recommended other emergency contraceptives were used in overweight and obese women, such as devices that could be implanted into the womb. The US regulator, the Food and Drug Administration, said it was "currently reviewing the available and related scientific information on this issue".
On the other hand, being obese is a pretty good contraceptive in itself.

I thought this would've been fairly simple, dosing for a smaller person isn't the same as a bigger person. but apparently in this case its a bit more complicated, literally the fact these women are fatter severely alters the pharmacokinetics of the drug and its not a simple matter of doubling the dosage.
The fedora and/or cowboy hat counter this.
Not to mention beer goggles & derivatives
thats why there are condomes
thats why there are condomes
the morning after pill is an emergency contraceptive not a replacement for other contraceptives
11st 3lb (75kg)
Who the fuck actually uses stones. Crying out loud. (1 stone = 14 pounds)
Who the fuck actually uses stones. Crying out loud. (1 stone = 14 pounds)
The UK where the study was published

just take two then
just take two then
doesn't proportionally scale like that, which is what the article is mostly about. that's why it's a bit of a problem, because the alternative emergency contraceptives are administered in different ways. they should make a different pill for these women with doses scaled accordingly
Nuh uh I don't need dem speshul obese peels Im curvy
you don't have to label them obese pills, just have a different pills for different body weights.
That is not really surprising for example, in males your T levels are cut in half among other things when you're obese. Even though the mechanism that renders this ineffective is different to extents in this case.
Who the fuck actually uses stones. Crying out loud. (1 stone = 14 pounds)
We're a country that uses metric for nearly everything Except weighing ourselves.
Oooooh ho ho ho boy! I sure hope some tumblr SJW finds this article.
They did!
In a move that’s bound to frighten everyone, HRA Pharma, the company the manufactures the European version of Plan B called Norlevo has revised its packaging to indicate that the pregnancy prevention medication is not always effective for women over 165 pounds and doesn’t work at all for women who weigh more than 176 pounds.

Thin privilege is your body being seen as the norm, and therefore medications are made for you. Thin privilege is being able to trust that said medications will work.

And there are seriously people on here who say thin privilege isn’t a thing?

Having a product made without your body type even considered is thin privilege. Stop trying to claim “science” changes that fact. Just because fat bodies need more of a specific drug for it to work properly doesn’t excuse them from not even considering fat people may have to take more or have a different amount prescribed to them. They are able to do this shit with dogs at the vet, yet cannot even acknowledge that PEOPLE come in different sizes and may need a different dosage. Privilege isn’t something that is always done consciously but when thin people are treated as the “norm” when creating drugs and fat people are not even considered worthy of having a correct dosage that is thin privilege.

Alarming.

THIS IS ACTUALLY FUCKING TERRIFYING

Distributing a medical product without testing it for higher body weights - especially given that the aforementioned “SCIENCE!” that adipose tissue interferes with how hormonal medications work IS WELL KNOWN - and without indicating that it may not work over a certain weight or may require a different dosage? THAT IS UNEQUIVOCALLY THIN PRIVILEGE. The privilege thin people enjoy here is having your bodies considered the default, the bodies that medications are designed for and tested on.

you don't have to label them obese pills, just have a different pills for different body weights.
Obviously not but I can see many fatties crying about how they need the special pill designed for fat people.
So basically the sales for this pill in the US will crash faster than a flying burrito.
You're kind of being a dick right now. [editline]3rd December 2013[/editline] That one is kind of an interesting thought.
It seems to imply that there's a grand conspiracy by big pharma to oppress the obese when I'm not sure that's the case. The human body is fucking complicated and not all medicines will work for all people. Expecting anything else seems unrealistic.

Expecting anything else seems unrealistic.
okay so let's just make a new pill so these people don't have to deal with something that is at least 4 times worse for them or having to have an emergency contraceptive put in their womb! like that's pretty much all you need to alleviate this problem.
Not to mention bigger doses are more expensive.
then charge them more accordingly!!!!
Who the fuck actually uses stones. Crying out loud. (1 stone = 14 pounds)
Everyone in the United Kingdom, you imperialist pigdog.
