A man in the US accidentally shot himself in the head and died on Monday as he was trying to persuade his girlfriend that guns are safe. The unnamed 36-year-old from Independence Township, Michigan, was demonstrating how his three handguns are safe when they are not loaded by holding them to his head and pulling the trigger,Detroit Free Press reported. But when the third gun went off, the man was struck in the head with a bullet. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say three children not related to the man, aged 7,10, and 12, were in the home at the time of the shooting, but did not witness it. The man’s girlfriend told police that he had been drinking most of the day before he died, and sheriff’s officials said alcohol appears to have been a factor in the incident, according to CBS Detroit. An autopsy will be performed by the Oakland County Medical Examiner as an investigation into the man’s death continues. A man in St. Petersburg, Florida died in similar circumstances in January last year, when he too tried to show that guns are safe and shot himself in the head. Okay that's just stupidity. Didn't even check before doing that.
was demonstrating how his three handguns are safe when they are not loaded by holding them to his head and pulling the trigger
Are we sure this wasn't some time-traveling neanderthal?

Guy was drunk, the real cause here is him being fucking drunk not the fact the gun was loaded. Alcohol really brings the best out of people don't it.
Even if you know a gun isn't loaded, you shouldn't be aiming it at something you don't intend to destroy.
Even if you know a gun isn't loaded, you shouldn't be aiming it at something you don't intend to destroy.
My acne. And my fat rolls.
a disassembled pistol with no bullets or firing mechanisms is still a threatening object (as in heightened sense of awareness around/pertaining to it, not that it's dangerous) in my mind, and i think that goes doubly for the folks who actually own guns. shame that feller was wasted enough to ignore that and to try and prove his point that way.
Even if you know a gun isn't loaded, you shouldn't be aiming it at something you don't intend to destroy.
you treat all guns like they are loaded this is just darwin playing into effect
Rule #1 of gun safety: ALWAYS handle a gun as if it's loaded. Guess he was too drunk to remember that... Edit: Ninjas

Yep, first rule of teaching gun safety. Hold a gun up to your head and pull the trigger, I mean really? I feel sorry for his wife and the kids but for fucks sake that breaks every rule of gun safety. Hell to this day if I am cleaning my guns and I accidentally point it at myself it freaks me out even though I check multiple times and know it is unloaded. What goes through your head to point multiple handguns at your head not knowing if they are unloaded. You gotta have respect for something so dangerous, that's like trying to balance on one foot next to a industrial shredder.
you treat all guns like they are loaded this is just darwin playing into effect
if you wave around an unloaded gun and point it at people and shit because it's no longer equates to a weapon in your mind you're in the same boat as this dead guy imo [editline]25th February 2014[/editline]
Yep, first rule of teaching gun safety. God damn fucking idiots. Check that it's unloaded, don't point it at yourself even as a joke, because it's not a fucking joke, and don't touch guns if you're drunk. Even when I hear about stories of people on the "back 40" with a couple of shotguns and a 24 of beer I think they're fucking idiots. It's not a mixture that goes well.
I can only imagine this entire event was proceeded by a "Here, hold my beer."
nobody has done it yet ? okay "Everyone look at that, because I won't be doing it again."
just because a gun is unloaded without it's magazine doesnt mean that there isnt a bullet in the chamber natural selection strikes again i suppose. those poor kids :/
isn't it rule 1 to always assume a gun is loaded? or 2? first rule dude
Teaching the number one rule of gun safety, the realistic way.
Dislike this view all you like, but I honestly feel this guy kind of had it coming, despite he was probably a nice man and gave to the community and whatever. But if you're going to point a gun at your head and claim guns are safe, don't be mentally retarded or drunk while doing it, please. Check check check. I don't feel sorry for him, but my condolences, regardless.

I bet she learned a valuable lesson about gun safety, though.

"This is NOT what you-BANG-"
Guy was drunk, the real cause here is him being fucking drunk not the fact the gun was loaded. Alcohol really brings the best out of people don't it.
Maybe if drinking gets you into a mindset where you´ll start playing russian roulette with a semi-automatic then maybe he shouldn't be drinking in the first place.. Seriously... Sucks he's dead and all, but it's his own damn fault.
Reminds me of that topic about the suicide bomber training.
At least he only killed himself and no bystanders, can't say I'm particularly sympathetic
one could make the distasteful argument that this is a form of population control
now i found out why it was the final lesson of the gun safety.
A man in the US accidentally shot himself in the head and died on Monday as he was trying to persuade his girlfriend that guns are safe.
He was wrong, or she is right.
My acne. And my fat rolls.
I'm reminded of that one Simpsons episode where Homer joins the NRA.
