• Corporate iPad Users Have No iDea Why They Have Them
Turns out, its not only Apple fanatics and Angry Birds-lovers who have fallen heads-over-heels for the iPad. A recent survey shows that an increasing number of businesses do too – 68% of the businesses interviewed either already deployed tablets or planned to do so by the end of 2012. Unlike Apple-heads and Angry Birds-heads, however, the businesses can't quite tell you why. Over 50% of the companies surveyed by Digital Research said they flat-out didn't have a plan for those spiffy new tablets they were handing out, other than "Oooooh, shiny." Of the companies that did have a tablet PC strategy, the majority of them liked to use the devices to process paperwork and provide apps for salesmen on the run. Other reasons cited include keeping on top of financial information and customer service support. While corporate buyers may not like the idea of spending money on $500 paperweights, the folks at Apple must be dancing in the street. A full 83% of correspondents said the iPad was the tablet of choice in their office. That's not surprising considering that they don't have any, you know, productivity plans for the devices. In related news, we expect sales of Angry Birds to improve in the fourth quarter. Not this gimmick!
Problem with the iPad is that it's trying to force a market inbetween notebook computers and MP3 players in terms of entertainment. Proper tablets typically carry operating systems with only slight variation from their desktop counterparts, and many have styluses for proper artistic work. The iPad doesn't provide for any niche market, it's just a new way to make money from idiots who can't think for themselves. iPads are baby toys compared to proper tablets in terms of usefulness in a workplace.

damn people and their rudimentary choices in electric shit i'm supposed to be angry at this right? BRRR i hate apple USB ports android BRR

They're fun to draw stuff on, and read through stuff.
Haha I see the iPad as more of a casual device for if you can't be bothered to use your laptop... I don't have one though
Every time I see someone in a position of power walking around with an iPad, iCringe. On second thought, any tablet is pretty much useless when compared to some kind of netbook.

You can't do real work either on a netbook seriously. I had to use one when my laptop was broken, it's frustrating because everything is slow (and most operating systems aren't optimized for them). While I agree an iPad is more of an entertainment device, Keynote is really fast compared to powerpoint on my shitty netbook
I almost bought one for the hell of it. $800.00 for a crappy tablet? Not when I could get a HP Pavilion Laptop for the same price that blew the iPad in terms of specs out of the water, then shredded it with AA guns. :v: I'll get a proper tablet when a proper tablet comes along, that's cost-effective, affordable, and is more useful than a simple gimmick.
IPads are toys, people use Thinkpads for actual work.
it's funny because the corporation I work at purchased iPads and now we all look at them with the same views as the businesses in this article. What exactly are we going to do with these tablets? If we wanted to incorporate any of our applications on them, we would have to rewrite the most basic ones, and even then how would they be more efficient than a normal computer? Who would walk around on them doing any serious work? They'll never replace the Win-Mo Pocket PC's in shipping, I could never see those guys carrying an iPad around with a giant barcode scanner attached. Our WinMo tablet fits in your hand and does what we need it to do. The best part is we don't have to pay for every little program we put on them. For our tech guys, we used Linux and Windows based servers. If we wanted to remote desktop into a windows server, might as well buy a windows netbook. At least it has native remote desktop and a telnet client. Could you imagine telnet on an iPad? And having to constantly use it? Nah. The only idea so far? Punch in and out on these things. Oh well I'm glad we spent $800 to allow one person to punch in and out of work. If anything, our department would probably like to see something like the Dell Inspiron Duo mature. We only have ONE of those and already we have found uses for it. Right now it's being used to test interfaces for our kiosk applications. way better than throwing a touchscreen monitor between people. Who knows what other people are using it for, but it's time is limited. Oh, and it runs windows, and anything we really need can be found on sourceforge for free!
IPads are toys, people use Thinkpads for actual work.
By the way, thinkpads have really weak screens that break easily.
The iPad has become (or rather always has been) nothing more than something to show off. They are totally useless when it comes to work.
arrrrrgh I'm so mad that people use electronics that I don't like
It's a pretty damn expensive casual device then. Also extremely limited in function.
Yeah, it's an Apple product.
It's a pretty damn expensive casual device then. Also extremely limited in function.
Exactly, people still buy it though for some reason
Exactly, people still buy it though for some reason
Because it's shiny
arrrrrgh I'm so mad that people use electronics that I don't like
you are the angstiest teen
By the way, thinkpads have really weak screens that break easily.
They have flaws, but Thinkpads are basically the industry standard for general-purpose work computers. They are proven and functional, while iPads are toys the size of laptops that are incapable of doing anything that can't be done with a smartphone.
was that iDea part in the title intentional
arrrrrgh I'm so mad that people use electronics that I don't like
Perhaps the anger stems from the fact that corporations are getting huge tax breaks and then blowing money on shit they don't even know the purpose of
Perhaps the anger stems from the fact that corporations are getting huge tax breaks and then blowing money on shit they don't even know the purpose of
I was making fun of the attitude toward ipads being expressed in this thread. probably should have clarified that
If the iPad had a faster processor and I could use it for decent art, it would be great. There has been some talk of developers hooking it up with Adobe's products to use as a touch-screen monitor in Photoshop, but I do not know where that is at now.
I have recently acquired (won) a blackberry playbook tablet. The features on it, while not a replacement for a laptop, certainly allow it to be put to good (corporate) use. I personally think 10" tablets, while fun, have a similar portability to a laptop, but lack features.
I can't think of any reason why a tablet would ever be good for corporate use. they're useless and awkward. just use a laptop

Normal companies first make a cost/use analysis and decide if it's worth buying. NO company ever buys something without even knowing if it needs it (except if it's something cheap as fuck like pens) [editline]18th May 2011[/editline]
If the iPad had a faster processor and I could use it for decent art, it would be great.
But while they have excellent touchscreens for consuming media, there are muuuuch better drawing tablets available.
Sure, but if it let you draw directly onto your document it would be a hell of a lot cheaper than a Cintiq monitor.
I bought an iPad 2 because I wanted a larger screen to watch movies on while I'm out, and also as a portable gaming device because I needed an upgrade from my iPod Touch. I also have Sketchbook Pro on there so I can draw shit when I feel like it. People will say stuff like "iPad is stupid, you can do that on a laptop!". The thing is, the iPad makes it more enjoyable. I want to watch a movie on a larger screen, and I'd rather have a light and good looking device to do it on than have a laptop in my lap playing it. The games for it are also fun in my opinion. I'm all for PC (Windows) but I have to admit, I like the iPods and iPads. I did my research on multiple tablets and liked the iPad the best, and a plus was that it was a good looking. Overall, the iPad is an entertainment device, but has useful apps that you can download. Go ahead and call everyone who bought one an idiot, and say you cringe whenever you see one just because you prefer something else. You are overreacting about the iPad way too much.
