Hello all,
Sorry if there is something wrong with this thread, I am new to this forum and had a hard time finding what I was looking for. I will gladly change anything to make it acceptable if it's not.
I am having a hard time choosing between the Nikon D5100 and Canon EOS 600D. Maybe there is something better in this price range or a bit higher? Also, what lens to buy with it, as I understand you can choose what lens to buy with. And are there any accessories (excluding batteries and a case) that would be necessary to the goals described in the next paragraph?
I am relatively new to photography and am looking to buy a DSLR. My price range is quite ok as I have been saving for this. My goal is creative photography with people, objects and different things in nature. In the future, also events.
I don't know very much about the cameras themselves, but am planning on studying cameras, build and all, and everything about photography as much as possible since it has always been a passion of mine, that was out of reach to me until now.
Also, I would like to buy this camera by evening on Monday the 5th of December. Both cameras I mentioned are available in a store nearby.
I have searched for information about these cameras and found nothing that I can trust. One site says they are both very similar, almost no difference, and another says the D5100 is much better. Another says the EOS 600D is better.
So I would very much like to hear from people here, from your personal and non-personal experience and/or knowledge.
:)
have you looked at http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1089372
Yes, I looked through it though it's nearly impossible to read all of it and maybe I just did not understand, but the search option I found was of no help either. Maybe I should have posted this there?
I vote Nikon by accident. :(
If it helps I have a Canon T3i/600D so if you have any questions feel free to ask.
I messed with a Nikon D5100 while I was deciding what to get and I'd say get the T3i/600D + the 50mm 1.8 lens

If you're really serious about spending enough money to buy either of those two cameras I do thoroughly suggest you read the thread.
You'll see conversations evolve - with disagreements and unanimous decisions about what cameras in different price ranges are best.
You should also make sure to get both of them in your hands. Find a shop that has both of them and see which one feels better to you. At the end of the day, it's all really about personal preference more than anything else.
600D is the way to go, I'm a happy pie.
600D, and Canon got good lenses
I voted Canon because I personally prefer the feel of a Canon body in my hands. Stop by a BestBuy or other retailer and get a feel for both cameras; try navigating through menus and decide which feels much more natural. The reason this is so important is because as a photographer your camera needs to be an extension of your reflexes, so if you notice a good subject and need to get a photo quick you'll want to be able to quickly and fluidly adjust settings to get said photo.
Both are great cameras though, and if I am correct Nikon and Canon are generally equal in quality with Canon having a slight edge over video on its higher end models.
Is there an overwhelming difference between the 550D and 600D? i know the T3i has a movable LCD, but I didn't really look much into it.
Nope
Get a 60D instead!

It's brilliant for us cinematography lads.
I'm personally a Nikon fan as far as camera feel goes, but again, it's all really opinion.
the D5100 always bugged me because they entirely revamped the control layout compared to every other nikon ever, but given it's got the same sensor as the D7000 (not quite the same processing power nor advancement of control and compatibility, though), it's got some fierce potential in the right hands.

I loved that.
