RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil –
When Pope Francis greets his flock on Rio’s white-sand Copacabana beach this week during his first international trip, he’ll do so in the same open-topped jeep “popemobile” he uses at the Vatican, breaking down the bulletproof barrier between the pontiff and the people.
But while he'll be traveling with only two Swiss Guards dressed in discreet civilian clothes, the "people's pope" may still have a hard time connecting with the 2 million people expected to greet him. More than 10,000 army, air force and navy officers, as well as 12,000 regular police and 1,700 elite security forces, will guard him during his 18 public appearances during his weeklong visit, starting Monday, to Brazil for World Youth Day.
Brazilian authorities have been meeting day and night to perfect the security plan for Pope Francis’ visit in what has been described as "the biggest police operation in the city's history,” by Roberto Alzir Dias Chaves, Brazil’s undersecretary for major events. The armed forces will handle security of the air space, border surveillance, chemical and biological weapons, maritime defense and cybersecurity, according to a defense ministry spokesman.
Wow that is a lot of people.
Also if you haven't heard if you follow the pope on twitter you get time off in purgatory.
I wish I were making that up but I'm not the Vatican actually said if you hit the popes "follow" button you get time off in purgatory.
Their police force is pretty much like the US's military

That was never said. It is you and only you who chooses how long you spend in purgatory by the sins you have commited. The pope said that you can attend internet 'confessions' or something like that, but nothing about the purgatory.
On the topic, that's a little bit crazy but oh well I don't care because the pope is important and he's making pretty good changes to the church.
Surely God would protect him though?
Surely God would protect him though?
Maybe he did by sending 10,000 military personnel?
Surely God would protect him though?
Everyone knows it takes Jesus 3.4 seconds to get to earth and I'm sure a sniper would've killed him by then.
is it because he's argentinian
Francis? what happened to benedict? how far behind am I?
Francis? what happened to benedict? how far behind am I?
Francis has been "new" for months. It was big shit on the news when Benedict decided to retire.

Did you know the US has a black president now?
Everyone's so keen on letting the world know how many resources countrie's governments dispose to welcome the pope and so little people interested in listening to what he has to say.
Did you know the US has a black president now?
I heard about that one, yes
he's so humble...
This would be a perfect time to assassinate the president, they would never see it coming!
10,000 military personnel, 12,000 police and 1,700 elite security.
And I thought 10,000 was too much.
Pope Francis used to be a bouncer, he can protect himself without a holy army.
This totally makes me want to become the Pope myself so I can have a vintage "popemobile" and 10,000 guards protecting me.

I may be a pan-abrahamic God-fearer, but isn't that supposed to be a joke? Because, you know, purgatory is a punishment lasting forever for he who turns away from God?
Purgatory is a medieval notion. It doesn't apply to today's Chrurch doctrine.

Except they literally made a statement like four days ago saying that you can cut down your purgatory stay by following the Pope on twitter.
I'm guessing the military personnel were assigned to him.

You end up in purgatory when you die but are "imperfect" and then go to heaven after being purified, you go to hell if you are irredeemable or never attempted to redeem yourself however.
What the person above me said. Hell is for those who do not believe in God and for whose names are not in the book of life, so those who have not accepted Jesus Christ as their saviour. Like I said before, it was never that you can cut down your time in purgatory - it was that you can attend online confessions or something.

Source?
Did you know the US has a black president now?
Really? I'm still picking up news over my listserv that the President declared a War on Terror!!
Their police force is pretty much like the US's military
Not at all. They have various types of police units. Policia Militar, Policia Federal, Policia Civil.
EDIT: Policia Militar, unlike the MP of the US Army, deal with day to day civilian issues. Just saying it in case anyone wonders what the difference between these two.
Everyone's so keen on letting the world know how many resources countrie's governments dispose to welcome the pope and so little people interested in listening to what he has to say.
You also forgot to mention how many resources it will also generate, as people from all South America will go to Brasil, so it also generates income for local traders/businessmen.
Ah, whatever the Church says in todays world, has little relevance. Philosophy has left behind the notion of realism and a pre-defined world, which is on what the Church is based.
I just want to add something more: The funniest thing related to Argentine society-Church is that the Peronist doctrine, dictated by Peron himself, is just a carbon copy of the Church Social Teachings.
Which, people doesn't remember (Well, MOST people), and think Peron made it up by himself.
Surely God would protect him though?
God didn't protect John Paul II from soaking a bullet.
God didn't protect John Paul II from soaking a bullet.
But didn't John Paul II die fro...oh, right.
Well apparently they found a bomb at one of the sites the Pope is scheduled to visit in Brazil
Rio de Janeiro (CNN) - A small explosive device was found Sunday near a religious sanctuary that Pope Francis is scheduled to visit in Brazil later this week, Sao Paulo military police confirmed hours after the pope arrived on Monday.
