• Upgrading to a quad core

I have some extra money I've been meaning to use and I was wondering if upgrading to a quad core would give me a noticeable difference in my gaming over what I originally have and if it would be worth it to upgrade. I usually play Source games, about to play BC2, and a various assortment of other games. My current setup: Athlon X2 240 2.8GHz 4GB DDR3 1333 XFX Radeon HD 5770 I was thinking of maybe getting this. On a side note, will I notice any difference outside of gaming as well? As in normal everyday PC use.
That processor is going to noticeably increase your general computer speed. It gives a faster core and has 4 cores. I would say it would increase your performance in gaming, but not by a whole lot.
That's a decent set up you have already, so I'd hold on to that for a while until something substantially better comes along. Definitely overclock the X2 240 though, I got my 250 (3Ghz variation) to 3.5GHz very easily on the stock cooler. Try it.
Hardware or software overclocking? I've never done it before so I wouldn't know how.
Hardware or software overclocking? I've never done it before so I wouldn't know how.
I would assume Bios or AMD Overdrive
I would assume Bios or AMD Overdrive
Bios is the only way to go.
BIOS of course.. Don't use programs for OCing CPUs.
BIOS of course.. Don't use programs for OCing CPUs.
AMD overdrive crashes my pc so I overclocked with bios. Got this http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103772&cm_re=6000%2b-_-19-103-772-_-Product to 3255MHz . Increase the multiplier and bus speed, remember multiplier x bus speed = clock. I suggest 10 values at a time boot to windows if it works then good if not decrease by 1 till it works. I suggest you google how to overclock as that was a very brief explanation.
Is there any chance of fying the processor when OCing it? (im a newb to this too)
you could just unlock your 240 to a 440 if you have a SB 710 or higher
Is there any chance of fying the processor when OCing it? (im a newb to this too)
If you get too overzealous, yeah. But if you go slow then you should be fine.
you could just unlock your 240 to a 440 if you have a SB 710 or higher
Isn't that with a Sempron 140?
Isn't that with a Sempron 140?
Sempron 140 can unlock to a 240, but I haven't heard any stories of a 240 unlocking to a 440. I've heard of the athlon II X3 unlocking to a quad though.
