I currently have an HD 5770 and I was wondering if I it is worth it replacing it with 2 GTX 240s in SLI (I can get them for next to nothing from my friend). I do a lot of gaming so will I receive an improvement in that category. I mainly play RTS's and RPG's, with some other types as well.
My other components:
i5 750
Gigabyte Mobo (too lazy to look which one, but I know that I have space for the cards)
If you want to know anything else, just ask.

Fuck, no.
Stick with the 5770.
1. The GTX 240 does not exist, I think you mean GT 240
2. The GT 240 does no support SLI
What Makol said.
However if it turns out to be a GTS 240 those can SLI in which case you'll still get better performance on a single 5770 according to benchmarks, and a single
5770 has the option of getting a second 5770 down the line too.
No-brainer really.
It's also a terrible card to begin with.

how cheap are you getting the 240s for anyway
They'll probably end up being GTS 240's as most likely his friend is upgrading from two of them, but still two GTS 240's in SLi aren't as good as a 5770, even if they scaled 100% they'd be on par with a single 5770.

But the GTS 240s are OEM only, I can't find any place that sells them.

No idea where he got them then, but I assume if they're coming as two they were used in SLI and therefore have to be GTS 240s.
What do you mean?
You can't buy them in stores or online.

I edited my post as I understood what you meant, could of been given one or bought off ebay or something?

That's probably the only way to get them if you didn't get it in a prebuilt.
My friend told me GTX 240s and since you guys clearly pointed out they dont exist. I went and took a look at the cards and they are GTS 250s in SLI. I should have done this to start with...

If you're sure they're GTS 250's they will easily out perform a single 5770.
But keep in mind the price, how much are you getting them both for? If it's the same price as a single 5770 you'd be better off to just get another 5770.
Also keep in mind the GTS 250's are Dx10 in-case you were expecting Dx11.
I'd just get a second 5770 and not bother with the SLI 250s.

If he's getting them both for under $70 it'll definitely be worth the performance increase, anymore though and It would be better to just save a bit more for a second 5770.

After looking at some benchmarks for SLI I'd have to agree. Apparently SLI GTS 250s beat the GTX 285.

That's assuming the GT 240's scale decently at all.
I don't actually know how good 5770s are, I have 2 that I'm planning to use in my new computer but seeing as this is a thread about them I can ask a couple questions like what is the best game 2 5770s can run, just pretend its in an i5 build with about 4gb of RAM

2 5770s = 5870 = 6870 most cases
some games run better than others due to scaling

i thought HD 5870 was better than HD6870
