Timothy Hawkins said he expects his daughter, who is "very sorry", to plead guilty in court on Monday. Malaysian officials said she could be charged with causing public nuisance. Miss Hawkins, who was head girl at independent Ockbrook School, will be sentenced straight away and could face three months' imprisonment or a fine, her father said. Mr Hawkins, who has spoken to his daughter, said he was "horrified" to see her on the front pages of national newspapers. He said the situation should not be "blown out of all proportion". [h=2]'Angered spirits'[/h]Last Friday, Mt Kinabalu was hit by a magnitude 6.0 earthquake, which left 18 people dead, including children. A senior minister last week said the tourists had angered spirits by showing "disrespect" to the mountain, which is considered sacred by some tribes in Malaysia. Ms Hawkins and three other western tourists appeared in court on Wednesday to have their remand extended, according to Malaysian newspaper The Star. They will be held until Saturday while police continue to investigate. Mr Hawkins - who said his daughter was "obviously in the photos" - said: "It's fair enough to charge for the misdemeanour committed. "What we don't want is her lumbered with further charges." Asked how his daughter is, he said: "As far as I know, she is OK. She is a very intelligent, stoic young woman and she's OK. "I think she is preparing herself for the worst, just in case." [h=2]'Every faith'[/h]But he added it was "not a situation she's been in before, so it's not good". In a separate interview with the Guardian newspaper, he said: "I have got every faith in [Malaysia's] judicial system. I just hope they don't make an example of them." Miss Hawkins's former school described the ex-head girl as a "valued and accomplished student", who carried out volunteer work in Botswana in 2008 and raised more than £8,000 for charities. "It appears that Eleanor has made an error of judgement in this case and her actions have angered many people as well as attracting press coverage," a spokesman said. "We at Ockbrook School send our wishes of support and strength to Eleanor and her family at this difficult time as she reflects on her situation." Ranau district police chief Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah confirmed to the BBC the authorities had arrested Ms Hawkins at Tawau Airport in Sabah on Tuesday. Two Canadian tourists, who are siblings, and a Dutchman turned themselves in to police on the same day. Their lawyer Ronny Cham told the BBC's Jennifer Pak he had requested the four be held apart from other detainees in order to ensure their safety.
http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-derbyshire-33090028 Sure, while they should had respected the place, I still think its ridiculous to put them in prison for 3 months.
Can't upset them mountain gods.
Essentially blaming their tour group for angering a mountain god is pretty lame.
it's honestly a really cool photo, it looks very stylized
Essentially blaming their tour group for angering a mountain god is pretty lame.
Not saying you are wrong, but it's also pretty lame when tourists have no respect for the place they visit.
Not saying you are wrong, but it's also pretty lame when tourists have no respect for the place they visit.
Then fine them and be done with it. Something like this isn't worth a prison sentence, regardless of tribal superstition.
do they have any close-ups?
Not saying you are wrong, but it's also pretty lame when tourists have no respect for the place they visit.
Its... a mountain. They will not be the first, nor the last people or creatures to piss on it. I wonder if the authorities are rounding up every animal on the mountain, for pissing AND shitting on it. Heresy of the highest order.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see how what they did was disrespectful.
Looks like some 70's album cover honestly.
As a geologist/palaeontologist: lol.
Mountains have really high standards
Looks like some 70's album cover honestly.
As a 70's music enthusiast, I had to [editline]12th June 2015[/editline] Track list: Side A 1. Overture (1:24) 2. The Wild Toad (4:28) 3. Winds of Eternity (3:55) 4. Song of the Freezing Doves (7:12) Side B 5. Taking the Piss [PART I. Unzipping PART II. Yellow PART III. Relief PART IV. Persecution] (21:20)
Not saying you are wrong, but it's also pretty lame when tourists have no respect for the place they visit.
It's a fucking mountain. It's a pretty place, but that doesn't mean it's any more worthy of me not pissing on it than some bush in a forest.
if they go to prison they're going to get beaten the shit out of
Miss Hawkins, who was head girl at independent Ockbrook School, will be sentenced straight away and could face three months' imprisonment or a fine, her father said.
Maximum sentence does not equal given sentence.
Maximum sentence does not equal given sentence.
This is Southeast Asia, where governments like to impose harsh sentences on foreigners breaking laws as a form of dickwaving.
It's a fucking mountain.
This is Southeast Asia, where governments like to impose harsh sentences on foreigners breaking laws as a form of dickwaving.
Jailed for three days (with credit)
They were jailed for three days, but their sentences were back-dated to reflect time already served. A judge at Kota Kinabalu Magistrates' Court said the four had shown remorse and ordered the jail terms to run from 9 June, meaning the group is free to leave. He also fined each defendant 5,000 Malaysian ringgit (£860/$1,331).
But nudity is how humans naturally look. If anything, covering it up should be disrespectful, since it's bringing such an unnatural concept to a sacred place and is separating us from the form the gods intended for us to have (or the spirits or whatever created us in this belief system)
While blaming them and angering mountain gods and shit is stupid but as I once said in another thread, the mountain is a holy site for the local pagans. The only reason Hugh Low managed to climb it in 1851 is because the brits back then had complete power over the locals and could pretty much do everything they want. Its no different to this rock, [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/32814946/index65123165.jpg[/t] If you were to climb it naked and piss on it chances are you're gonna get the same treatment too. The only difference between the Uluru and Kinabalu is that the abbos were very insistent of on not letting people climb it and now that place is a restricted area while the bornean tribes in the other hand was insistent on showing off the beauty of the mountain to the people by letting them climb it.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't see how what they did was disrespectful.
Possibly because you're not Malaysian.
