Currently I've got a build of a core 2 quad 2.66ghz, gtx 460, 9800gtx+, 8gb of 800mhz ram on a lga775 evga motherboard, and a biostar motherboard I bought off a coworker for $50 with 8gb 1333mhz ram, first gen i5.
The core 2 quad bottlenecks bad, allowing my laptop with a 750m to get equal framerates as the build. I don't think the first gen i5 would be much of an improvement, so redoing all the cables for that minor upgrade doesn't seem worth it.
I'm think about buying a pentium g3258 and overclocking it to have a much more powerful cpu for games and emulation.
I can grab the ram from the biostar motherboard. Trying to get the most for my dollar, I'm wondering what motherboard and fan I should get for the processor(motherboard should allow overclocking easy and I assume stock fan isn't good enough for overclocking) and be prepared for future upgrades(later I'd like to put in a top i7, better graphicscard, faster ram). I also want to upgrade to an SSD now.
EDIT: Incase that wasn't clear I'm looking for motherboard, fan, and ssd recommendations, the pentium is the only thing I'm really decided on.
According to PassMark, the threads on the pentium is twice as powerful
Have you tried overclocking?
You will need to purchase new ram.
Why would he need to do that?

He got 8GB of DDR3 RAM as well, he doesn't have to purchase anything

The new Pentium G3258 overclocked can perform similar to a i7-4790k @ stock speeds in gaming.

That's really on the game. There's some where it suffers, and some where is performs well
I think you should buy a CM 212 Evo for you Core2 Quad and OC it.

I should have tried that back when I had the motherboard still on the pc, but I thought I could use the biostar motherboard for the pentium when I bought it. I think best case scenario, the core 2 quad or the first gen i5 could get to is 3.4ghz which really wouldn't feel that good on the old architecture compared with my i7 4700mq in my current laptop. While a little overclocking might make the core 2 quad or i5 bottleneck in games, It wouldn't make pcsx2 run as good as I want it to be.
I guess I wasn't very clear in my original post. Could I please get some motherboard, fan, ssd recommendations to go with the pentium upgrade?
I really wouldn't recommend getting a Pentium unless you are poor. You said earlier that you would buy an i7 and a high end card. For now you should try an OC with the i5 if you already have a motheboard for it.
The pentium is actually a solid chip when overclocked. Beats a haswell i3 in single threaded applications, like ps2 emulation
Ordered the pentium, msi z97 pc mate, CM212 evo, samsung 840 evo 256gb SSD, ssd bay converter, artic silver 5, and sata 6gbs cable for $346.91. Can't wait to get building Thursday/Friday.

I guess I could have gone all the way, but then I couldn't comfortably buy a 144hz monitor and/or a TV while saving most of my summer income before I go back to school. I've got my laptop if I need cores badly for something.
Solid purchases. Did you get that crazy microcenter deal on the pentium and Z97 pc mate for like $100?
Edit: I guess that deal's been over for a while

No, I spent $100 on the mobo as I ordered everything off amazon having my free student prime. I'm 2 hours from a microcenter, the deals inperson only so the gas there and back and time spent probably wouldn't make it worth it anyways.
