makes his role as an insane person better. what he doesn't understand is that they'll just put him in a mental asylum.

It's bad when I've completely forgotten which one of the recent shootings he did...

And here I thought I was the only one who thought those two looked alike.
Update: The judge has entered an automatic plea of not guilty, because Holmes said he is not ready to plea yet.
It is expected that he will plead not guilty by reasons of insanity.

This guy needs to get the death penalty. He will forever remain an issue for society if he gets sent to a mental hospital. I know facepunch is so heavily against the death penalty, but he deserves it. You dont pre meditate a mass-murder and try to plead insanity.
[editline]12th March 2013[/editline]
Update: his legal team tried to delay the plead. The judge denied it and entered in a standard "not guilty"

Totaly not a coincidence hehe. have anyone else noticed that alot of tv-series have had episodes involving assault weapons and massacrish scenes?
In the first few scenes in skyfall the bad guy is using large magazines on his fully automatic pistols.. oh and remember that mission in mw2 where you massacre alot of people at an airport? I think we got a bad case of mind control! I better put on my tinfoil hat.

Jesse is that you?
so we should keep giving such extensive media attention to mass murderers like this so that every homicidal nutcase out there has a guarantee that everyone on the planet will know their name if they pull the same shit right

Explain this please.
This guy needs to get the death penalty.
And this part too.
How does the death penalty need to happen? How is a man who murders a bunch of people in a theater for no reason not insane?

That's the sort of thinking that gets people off almost scott free for doing stuff like this
The insanity plea refers to only a specific sort of crazy. Of course anyone who takes a life intentionally, regardless of purpose, is insane, but not all in the same way. If the insanity plea was so generic then nobody would ever actually get convicted for murder.
If its premeditated, then the insanity defense is pretty weak.

I'm pretty sure just tossing a bunch of insane people into prison and calling it a day is a big part of why America's prison system is a running joke.
The main reason I find this dumb is because it seems like the insanity plea is the only real way anyone seems to ever get real rehabilitation in America.

Being found 'not guilty by reason of insanity' isn't a way of getting off scot free, especially in the case of murder it's likely someone would be put into a secure mental facility for a longer period than they would be imprisoned for.
The fucked up thing is this guy actually has a fanbase, who call themselves 'Holmies'. Random Tumblr girls who post pics of themselves in plaid shirts drinking smoothies with descriptions such as "Like a holmes!" as if it's a cool thing.
Those are the people belonging in a mental asylum.

I'm all for getting people who actually do have problems the help they need, but this is definitely a different case. As it's been said multiple times, this was all planned out, so not just some guy going crazy.

Definitely cushier than prison or the death penalty, and he'd likely be imprisoned for life anywho so time is irrelevant
You can still plan stuff out and be extremely mentally ill - the judgement for 'not guiltly by insanity' is based both on someone's ability to control themselves, and their ability to discern right and wrong.

Not really, secure mental health units aren't exactly cosy, someone that ill is unlikely to be greatly affected by the quality of their surroundings, and you seem to want to punish someone for something they had no control over.

I don't think that you have to be insane to intentionally take a life. I think you mean for someone to carelessly take a life intentionally, which might be because they're insane.

But how do you know they he had no control over it? You don't, so you can't make that call. Of course the same applies to me, I don't have any way of actually knowing if this guy was in his (mostly) right mind or not.
What I'm trying to get at is don't just go "Oh he had to be insane to have killed all those people" (which is what botbox was doing) and toss him into a mental care facility because that's not always the case. Murderers may all be insane but not all insanity makes you innocent.

You know someone planning out something like this could be the result of that person going crazy for a long period of time.
