100-Year-Old Grandma Has Finally Graduated From Elementary School
A 100-year-old Mexican grandmother finally graduated from elementary school and, following her grandchild's advice, plans to continue her education.
"The best career is education," Manuela Hernandez told Uno TV.
Hernandez was born in the southern state of Oaxaca in June of 1913, the year before World War I began. She had to leave elementary school after just a year to help her poor family with necessary chores around the house.
"My uncle Fernando Campos helped me get into school, but the following year, when I was able to wash and iron, they never let me go to school because they needed me to work," she said, in Spanish.
It was only within the last year that she resumed her studies at age 99, thanks to the advice from her grandchild who pushed her to go back to school.
Hernandez was handed her diploma on Saturday.

It's always great to see older people who don't give up on something they want to do simply because of their age
Good for her
you go girl!!!
a true american hero :))
I read the title expecting her to be held back 80-some years.
Kinda pointless and waste of time but good for her I guess.

education is valuable no matter how old you are. understanding more about the world is empowering and enriching.
The government of Mexico recognizes 68 distinct indigenous Amerindian languages (from seven different families, and other four isolated languages) as national languages in addition to Spanish. According to the Commission for the Development of Indigenous Peoples (CDI) and National Institute of Indigenous Languages (INALI), while 10–14% of the population identifies as belonging to an indigenous group, only around 6% speak an indigenous language.
I'm pretty sure the point here is that a hundred year old person would obviously already have an elementary school student's knowledge, but just be lacking the official title. This does seem pretty unnecessary imo.
also nice lorn gif
One of my good friends turned 93 the other day. She's still working and doing a lot on her own! She doesn't seem to be slowing down any time soon. It's good to see older people are still able to do great things!
She earned a diploma for graduating Elementary School?
That's sweet, happy for her.
Recent history classes must be fun if she goes to high school.
"Excuse me sir, that's wrong."
"How would you know?"
"I was there"
I know some people say Mexicans are lazy but this is too far.

idk for a very long time most people lived their entire lives not knowing how to read or write. that seems like a very major part of elementary school.
I don't understand why she felt this was necessary.

Old people like that have almost nothing to do. Having something to do avoids depression.

That's the joke. Congratulations.
How the hell did she make a living afterward? Family farm work?

What, working for your family ironing, doing dishes without pay for years is lazy now?

It's not about the diploma, its about sending a message
