He's done this work because God told him to. According to the TempleOS charter, it is "God's official temple. Just like Solomon's temple, this is a community focal point where offerings are made and God's oracle is consulted." God also told Davis that 640x480, 16-color graphics "is a covenant like circumcision," making it easier for children to make drawings for God. God demands a perfect temple, and Davis says, "For ten years, I worked on programming TempleOS, full time. I finished, basically, and the last year has been tiny touch-ups here and there."
what is a trivial solution
[editline]25th November 2014[/editline]
why does it have that of all things
looks like something straight out of the 80's
Mary's tits, that looks awful. If he wanted to make a Godly OS, why didn't he just use Unix or Linux as a base? At least then it wouldn't look so shitty. I'd prefer command line over that shite.
Edit:
He has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, having dealt with mental health issues since the mid-1990s. Because Davis often communicates in blocks of text produced by his oracle, or with apparently off-topic declarations about God, he’s had accounts banned from SomethingAwful and Reddit. He can be aggressive and confrontational, sometimes denouncing critics with profanity and call them "nigger."
Oh, that's why.

That has nothing to do with using unix as a base? At all?
He did it because he believed that God told him to.
what is a trivial solution[editline]25th November 2014[/editline]why does it have that of all things
well a trivial solution is something so easy to do is hardly worth noting. for example, for the equation x + y = 0 the trivial solution is x = 0, y = 0. im assuming by naming his company trivial solutions hes basically boasting about his programming skills.

I know it has nothing to doc with it, I'm just saying he should have saved himself the trouble of writing an OS from scratch.
Anyway, I'm not sure the author should have pandered to the man's schizophrenic delusions by writing a ten page article on his ugly looking OS.

The man in question lives with his parents at the age of 45 years old. He either sleeps, eats, surfs the internet, or works on temple os. He's been doing this for ten years.
He's completely lost and out of his mind and you happen to think we should just ignore the one thing that he tried to do, in his eyes, to make the world a better place.
Let him have his this, he really doesn't have much else.

no matter how ugly it is, its still amazing that one man made his own operating system from scratch
Ah shit I remember the videos he made of his OS. They were giving of a real creepy vibe.

He made a Ring-0 64bit multicore multitasking operating system from scratch.
He made the kernel, compiler, programming language and the full application stack all by himself.
That is fucking impressive.

It's honestly not very hard, it just takes a lot of time.
There's been a bunch of OSs written by a single person or just a couple of guys, the difference is that they catch on and other people start writing programs for them so the main guys don't have to.

but then youd just have some generic OS?

Writing a complete operating system and then some is no easy task, and I'm sure being impaired by one of the worst mental disorders around makes it that much harder of a task to achieve.
I'd love to see you make an OS, since you seem to think it's no big deal. I can't by the way, I don't even know where to begin, before that's even brought up as opposition to this post. On top of that statement you said they " catch on", what does that even mean? There are only three big OS' out there considering the general populace, those being Linux, Windows, and Mac OS and Linux is pushing it for the general public.
On top of everything, something that doesn't take a lot of time must not be very hard. I didn't mean to come off as an ass and I'm sorry, but I just plain disagree with everything you've just said.
Also I'm sorry for the double post, Amiga OS broke my automerge, and the irony is beyond belief... :v:

Starting it from pretty much scratch takes some mad skills
For somebody with a mental disability, he did more than I ever could. He deserves some praise for this.
He's a brilliant programmer. It is not easy or "simply a matter of time" to create a functional operating system upwards of 100k lines of code.

It's a damn shame he suffers from this sort of illness.
He may be a savant in some aspects, but even looking purely aat the technical side of his demands (let alone ideological) you can see he's batshit off the rocker.

Terry Davis is a master craftsman. An insane one, sure, but he is a genius at what he does.
Yes, it is "easy" to create yet another GNU/Linux fork. It is absolutely not easy to create an entirely new operating system, and to do it well.
If you're interested in software development, I recommend watching some of his "5-Minute Random Code Walk-Thru Videos Episodes" available on his website, http://www.templeos.org/.

You won't be writing Windows in a weekend, but the actual underlying OS itself isn't that complicated. A big problem with this discussion is what do you consider to be the OS? Does it encompass every program running on it, or just the support code to run the programs?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobbyist_operating_system_development
This breaks it down pretty well, most of the work in writing an OS would go to the kernel, and depending on the design that can be responsible for very little (Some kernels don't even have the concept of users, that's left up to userspace), or quite a lot (Linux or NT where they manage the filesystems and all IO) As for "catching on" I meant does the work inspire other people to come write code for it (Because as cool as it is to write an entire OS by yourself, most people wouldn't want to do that)
Also, here's another hobby kernel a guy wrote. https://github.com/Alexis211/Melon/blob/master/Source/Kernel/Core/kmain.wtf.cpp (Also look up MenuetOS, 64bit multitasking OS with a graphical UI that started out written by a single guy)
He has really interesting insight.

Well, praised be my fellow schizophrenic coder.
I have never accomplished anything worthwhile, though. Executive dysfunction can be really crippling.
This guy seems basically maxed out on positive symptoms, I have no positive symptoms, only negative ones. Makes it seem more like some sort of depressive disorder than schizophrenia, to people outside. Because I am not that delusional, anymore.

What a peculiar man.
Schizophrenia is some scary shit.
I can't wait to see his OS's version of the Sermon on the Mounted Partition.
