This fucking article cannot get any more hipster.
Granted it was an interesting idea and worth an honorable mention for trying something different, but no way should this be near any top 10 list.
I really enjoyed this game - the house was fun to explore, and depending on the order you discover things can make me expect something different than what the ending actually was. I agree that it certainly wasn't top 10 material, but I think the concept this game uses would make for an excellent horror / puzzle game exploring various empty buildings, like some sort of spooky urbex simulator.
Why are people so afraid of devs expanding the realm of the gaming experience? Like it's not only Gone Home that people have got really up in arms about for doing something different, Spec Ops: The Line, Proteus, The Stanley Parable, Dear Esther and heck even Shadow of the Colossus way back in the day all faced similar criticisms all because they didn't fit into people's narrow views of what a game can and can't be. How about instead of whining "but it's not really a gaaaaaaaaaaame" you accept that yes, it is an interactive piece of entertainment, which is the most purest expression of what a video game is and even though I don't find the appeal in it, some people do and more power to them.
white people: the video game

There are plenty of games out there that can be carried without traditional gameplay. Take a look at what telltales been doing: Almost purely focused on story, and they're producing excellent games loved by many. Gone home fell flat in all the areas it was supposed to succeed in, and that's what separates it from a good game like The Stanley Parable.
I didn't say that there weren't games doing well even thought they're not typical games? Heck even then, The Walking Dead has got people crying about how their choices didn't matter. (which is a completely fucking irrelevant complaint in the context of the actual game and the choices in it) I haven't actually played Gone Home yet so yeah, it could actually be really shitty (I gave Proteus as one of the games that people have been whining about, and I fucking hate it) but my issue is that people are complaining about it on the wrong issues, the whole "is it a game or not" debate is fucking stupid. The medium of video games is rapidly expanding at this very moment so it's not worth getting caught up having a heated discussion over one tiny game that probably won't be relevant in a few years. If you can buy it on steam, and you're not in the software section, then it's probably a game.
If you can buy it on steam, and you're not in the software section, then it's probably a game.
Ok, given that it is a game. Does it really deserve the praise it gets? AFAIK this is the what people most hate in Gone Home. Also if interactivity is all you need to make a game, TiVo is a game.
I don't know about you but I enjoyed the game, it had a pretty engrossing narrative.

I really hate Dark Souls but people were calling it the "best RPG ever made" back in 2011. Your personal opinion on whether a game "deserves" its praise or not is not really constructive, it just leads to shit flinging contests on dinky little video game forums (like this one right here).

Gone Home is just OK. It doesn't do anything amazing, it does completely fail at what it intended.

And you can determine if a game is good or not without having to recurr to subjectivity. That's the logic I use to determine wether a game "deserves" or not the praise it get, it's not really an opinion.
Should have been Best of 2013: #3 - The Stanley Parable
You mean worst of 2013 right?
lesbians run away from home cult bullshit in the background blah blah blah over all, I would never find any of the game interesting at all. Best of: lists are fucking jokes anyways did it actually change the market? not really, no.

There is always an element of subjectivity when analysing a video game. Sure a large part of the mechanical and technical elements of a game can be criticised objectively, but it just doesn't matter if you don't like the game in the first place. Like sure, Dark Souls is technically sound, it's a solid game. But it just didn't have any redeeming qualities to me (except for the aesthetic maybe, I did like the tone it gave off).
You will never be this progressive
That looks like some hipster version of American Gothic.
If this game made it to the top, that one theft game should be there too. It gets pretty intense when the home owner returns and you need to sneak away. And it has tons of items to interact woth with multiple endings. Made me feel and understand the difficulties of being a thief.
Imagine caring about what other people like or dislike. What a silly place that'd be.
I love this game, mostly because it manages to piss so many people off for no real reason.

The only games (that intended first and foremost to be a game) that also told a story well in 2013 were Bioshock Infinite and Last of Us. That being said if you think of it as a first-person point-and-click adventure game you can easily say that it handled the gameplay competently as well.

It's not what kind of game Gone Home is, it's the reception that it gets. Nobody is complaining that Gone Home isn't Bioshock or Call of Duty or Dota or some shit, it's not in that realm of judgement, like debating Soda vs. Pizza. The people that are complaining aren't mad that Gone Home is a terrible game for what kind of game it is, but that Gone Home gets more praise and attention as a narrative-focused game when honestly it's pretty fucking average/mediocre for it's genre vs. recent things like The Walking Dead or Stanley Parable. Yet it's still getting in every top 5 list like it's the coming of Jesus savior of videogames. It's not bad, but not at all great, and a lot of people feel that way.

Except I don't actually want to steal anything but being able to go through peoples things is like really interesting for me. I remember I read this story about this guy who went to this house party and he didn't know anyone there, anyways he got drunk and passed out in a bush and woke up to the kid throwing the party getting arrested. Everyone went home and the house was left open so he went inside and was going through the guys games playing them and looking through his stuff.. Holy shit I want to look through peoples things so bad for some reason what is wrong with me ??
