• Gravity Falls fans solve the show's final mystery with an international scavenger hunt

Can't find a good master article on this whole affair, so I'm going to have to MacGyver an OP for this one. This article's from a couple of weeks ago, sets out the background: http://io9.gizmodo.com/gravity-falls-fans-get-one-last-code-to-break-and-its-a-1784012573
If you’re not a fan, please let me explain. Gravity Falls was a cartoon that ran on Disney XD from 2012 until February of 2016, where it ended its run after two seasons. It followed the adventures of twins Dipper and Mabel Pines, who went to spend the summer with their uncle in the Oregon town of Gravity Falls. In the tradition of shows like Twin Peaks, the twins encounter the weird and the unexplained, from ghosts, to shape-shifters, to formerly unknown Presidents of the United States that were frozen for centuries. ... Hirsch said at the time that it was his decision to end the series, which did have a satisfying conclusion. [sp]The end of the world (dubbed “Weirdmageddon”) comes to Gravity Falls, our heroes stop the Big Bad, a yellow triangle of doom named Bill Cipher who was basically the devil, and the world is restored to (relative) normalcy.[/sp] However, at the very end of the credits, fans were greeted with the vine-covered image of Bill, seemingly stuck in the dirt somewhere.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/yobvPUN.gif[/t]
Speculation flew, wondering if this was real. Where would it be located and could people go and find it? Apparently, it is, and yes, you can go looking for it.
So GF fans have known/believed since February that somewhere, presumably in America, there was this statue of a character from the show, sitting in a forest somewhere waiting to be found. Probably the hardest part of the ARG was a physical jigsaw puzzle which was discovered in a PO box, and taken by a group of fans to a comic book store in Los Angeles to be assembled over a number of days. As they worked, the fans were visited by the voice actor of Dipper Pines, as well as the show's creator who announced, upon the puzzle's completion, that he'd be releasing the show's unaired pilot online as a reward. Anyway after the jigsaw was finally solved some more stuff happened, a map fragment was matched up to a real world location, and the statue was finally pinpointed at the small town of Reedsport, Oregon. Nearby fans set out immediately to the location marked on the map, and last night they finally found the statue: http://www.dailydot.com/parsec/gravity-falls-bill-statue-located-reedsport-oregon/
After 13 days of determination, cipher-solving, and global teamwork, Gravity Falls fans discovered the Bill Cipher statue at the end of creator and voice actor Alex Hirsch’s worldwide scavenger hunt. #CipherHunt took fans from St. Petersburg, Russia, to Japan and all the way to Reedsport, Oregon—the same state that is home to the fictional town of Gravity Falls—with a population of around 4,100. It was there that fans found treasure they worked so hard to find.

The groups of fans who descended upon Bill’s statue Tuesday night not only found the physical form of the triangle dream demon who terrorized the Pines family and the residents of Gravity Falls, but an actual box full of treasure. That contained a smaller version of Bill’s statue, fake money, a drawing of the Pines family, Bill’s statue (it read “Trust No One” under UV light), and a couple of messages congratulating the treasure seekers from Hirsch. One came in the form of a written letter visible only with the UV light.
Most of the ARG is kinda documented in the reddit megathread on it. Gravity Falls was pretty awesome, ain't no other cartoon gonna do this kind of shit
It's one of the best shows I've seen in recent memory, definitely a lot of work for a kids show.
yeah this show is great, i recommend at least one watch-thru if your interested the show doesn't pull punches when it comes to creepy shit.
lol, I was technically part of this. Over the weekend, there was one (false) clue that lead to Gates, OR that was supposedly the location of the statute. Many people, including me, went the the coordinates that was marked at Santiam Park south of the town. What I did was I went through the entire loop trail and found obviously nothing. Damn, I guess I got a nice hike out of it, here's the trail I basically took: [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/26512959/2016-07-31 19.43.11.jpg[/t] Clue was a red herring all along, and the next day Alex Hirsch drop the next clue which that lead to Reedsport (just 2 hours away from me!!!), and the statue and a treasure chest was found. I couldn't go since I was too busy with school, but I might check the town out this weekend just see Bill.
The statue is actually being moved due to a dispute with the location
If people want to read about the entire journey, I've been following along on this site where they've been writing live updates since the beginning: http://fuckyeahgravityfalls.com/post/147737686785
God I miss this show.
Something to know for anyone who wants to get into the series. The show was known for having an abysmal release schedule, such as having episodes with terrible release schedules along with copious amounts of 3-7 month hiatuses, including having a THREE MONTH HIATUS BEFORE PREMIERING THE FUCKING LAST EPISODE. If you decide to watch it you get to avoid the TORTURE that is Disney's assbrained premiere schedule and just watch it from beginning to end.
i love stuff like this people all over the world working together to sort something out, and it's always amazing how quick people tend to get it if the cure to cancer was some obscure ARG hidden in a popular tv show, i reckon we'd have it within two weeks

woah, spooky I just finished watching this last night!
Holy crap, this is amazing! Congrats to the lucky family who found it first! Man I miss this show, most likely gonna watch it again now after seeing this. Oh, and for those fans, Disney released the official Gravity Fall's Journal 3 replica which has never before seen information about The Author's past and other mysteries. I got mine a couple days ago an it's amazing.

Having just started Gravity Falls, it's already in my top 10 animated series.
Don't own it but Dipper's real name was cooler than it could have been. Was expecting Steve
Dipper's real name fits with Mabel as it's similar (and they're twins too). Gravity Falls was for one episode and then a 3-7 month hiatus before the other one.

Gravity Falls had almost no consistent release schedule between episodes: [t]http://i.imgur.com/eRRgL19.png[/t]
