It was the last bit of darkness before sunrise. A single burst of machine-gun fire rang out across the valley just as a volley of rocket-propelled grenades slammed into Observation Post Topside. Then the valley erupted in chaos. For the next 90 minutes, Sgt. Ryan Pitts and his fellow paratroopers from 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, would fight off a force of more than 200 enemy fighters. Nine paratroopers gave their lives and 27 were wounded July 13, 2008, in Wanat, Afghanistan, as the men fought to keep the enemy from overrunning OP Topside and Vehicle Patrol Base Kahler. The Battle of Wanat was one of the deadliest of the war. Pitts, now a former staff sergeant, is credited with enabling U.S. forces to hold the OP, turning the tide of the battle and protecting fallen Americans from enemy hands. For his actions, Pitts will receive the Medal of Honor, the White House announced Monday. Pitts, 28, will be the ninth living service member to receive the nation’s highest award for valor for actions in Afghanistan or Iraq. Seven troops have been posthumously awarded the medal for their actions in those wars. He also will be the third soldier from 2nd Battalion to receive the MoH for actions during the unit’s 2007-2008 deployment to Afghanistan — a deployment that has also yielded a Presidential Unit Citation, a Valorous Unit Award, two Distinguished Service Crosses, 26 Silver Stars, 93 Bronze Stars with V device and 169 Purple Hearts.
The Full Story is in the article
A hard battle valiantly fought, thanks to the Pitts Crew of Observation Post Topside.
“I crawled into the center, but there wasn’t really anything I could do for Garcia,” Pitts said. “I just laid there and held his hand. We just talked for a while. He told me he wanted me to tell his mom and wife that he loved them. I don’t know how long I stayed there for.”
This nearly made me start crying. My god.
You can see it in his eyes.
if they melt down his balls they could probably cast a few thousand more of those medals
if they melt down his balls they could probably cast a few thousand more of those medals
I don't think the medals are supposed to be made out of steel.
I don't think the medals are made out of steel.
yes they are source; I am a medal expert
He didn't solely defend that outpost
27 and a Medal of Honor. That must feel fucking good.
yes they are source; I am a medal expert
they are not source; i am a metal expert
they are not source; i am a metal expert
What are they made out of then smart ass!
This story kinda shows how well the US Army trains their troops.
He didn't solely defend that outpost
For a good while he did, and he was the only one who kept in communication with his commander and that other squad, as well as providing feedback for the attack helicopters when they finally arrived. The guy was alone, if you actually read the article, for a good bit and started lobbing m203 40mm's just to keep insurgents from overrunning his position, which reportedly were within earshot of him and could be heard over the radio when he would call in for support. But was he completely alone for the entire duration? No, but thanks to his actions, he was able to communicate and help coordinate a counter attack that prevented the OP from being overrun and allowed for medevacs to land and take the wounded out of there.
27 and a Medal of Honor. That must feel fucking good.
I know what you mean but be careful with your words; this guy went through a /LOT/ of shit and saw close friends get shot and die in order for him to receive the medal. I don't think that feels good.
so i was right because what you just described there was a whole effort from a lot of people
No, because you somehow still can't read the part where he was all alone, told by his commander that no one could come help, and was left to shoot his m203 and pray it would prevent his position being overrun by insurgents who, again, were within earshot. So, singlehandedly, he suppressed incoming enemy troops with his grenade launcher and allowed for enough time for reinforcements to arrive. Please read and understand that part.
Alone =/= solely didn't the people who died help defend the outpost?
Alone =/= solely didn't the people who died help defend the outpost?
You're pretty dense, aren't you? You're arguing semantics over a sensationalist headline, when the fact remains, the dude was alone, wounded, and still revved up fighting to survive for not only himself, but the wounded men around him. He did that by himself, solely suppressing the insurgents, for a period of time. Was the ENTIRE thing all one man, master chief style? Of fucking course not.

Of fucking course not.
You're the one with the bug up your butt over this whole thing. I just said the title was misleading. He didn't solely defend the outpost, you even wrote a long post describing exactly how he didn't defend the outpost solo so I can't see why you're getting so angsty over semantics. Just accept I was right and move on.
But.. you're not right. He did indeed defend the outpost on his own, even if it wasn't for the majority of the engagement. The statement is correct the very second he became the sole defender of the outpost, and continued to be correct until reinforcements arrived.
Have you solely tilled a field of you're the last farmhand to leave it? anyway this is getting out of hand so I'll drop it.
Because farmland is actively attempting to kill you and your wounded comrades. Seriously?
Depends if you're a Cambodian farmer :v:
Have you solely tilled a field of you're the last farmhand to leave it? anyway this is getting out of hand so I'll drop it.
If everyone on the farm besides you gets fucking killed, you're the only one on the farm. What a stupid metaphor.
27 and a Medal of Honor. That must feel fucking good.
It's not like age has anything to do with it. The fact that he lived and received one is pretty stellar.
If everyone on the farm besides you gets fucking killed, you're the only one on the farm. What a stupid metaphor.
Yes you're the only one on the farm. But have you done all the tilling?
There are no words to describe how fucking bad ass that is.
Have you solely tilled a field of you're the last farmhand to leave it? anyway this is getting out of hand so I'll drop it.
Know when you're wrong and know when its time to quit.
What are they made out of then smart ass!
testicles
Yes you're the only one on the farm. But have you done all the tilling?
Do you really think that he, his comrades and everyone else doesn't acknowledge the fact that his friends also helped before they were killed? And that the soldiers came to help later? The point is that this man is the reason why that outpost held. And apart from that, for a time, he really did hold out against an insane amount of enemies.
anyway this is getting out of hand so I'll drop it.
=/=
Yes you're the only one on the farm. But have you done all the tilling?
?
If everyone on the farm besides you gets fucking killed, you're the only one on the farm. What a stupid metaphor.
you really should have gone with "If everyone else on the farm buys the farm, then you're the only one left on the farm." quite a missed opportunity
Yes you're the only one on the farm. But have you done all the tilling?
You're fucking stupid, shut the fuck up already.
