Hello, Facepunch,
I need a small favor from you guys with one of my classes for college. We are first all split up into teams. We are then to mess up another teams computer so they have to troubleshoot it until they can get it working again. So i'm asking you Facepunch, what are some of your ideas on the best ways to mess up the other teams computer. Looking for out of the box stuff. The team that can come up with the best problem and can troubleshoot their own computer (not asking for this.) doesn't have to take the midterm. There are only a few rules.
Rules:
The Computers have to run perfectly after the project.
We can't mess with the jumpers or anything that you would need the manual for.
We can't damage the computer beyond repair or delete system files. (obviously)
We have to explain what we did if they can't figure out and how to fix it.
Be very devious.
New Rule: No scripts. I was just informed about this. :[
Thank you!
disable usb ports and mouse and keyboard port
Infest it with tons of free "antiviruses", disable control panel, task manager, bats, cmd and run in the start menu
Are you allowed to mess with the hardware or is it just software?
Also how do you know someone from the other team doesn't visit Facepunch? :v:
Do the PCs use IDE drives?
If so, grab a boxcutter or other extremely sharp knife and cut into the wires right at the plug, it's invisible and it'll put them off if they try to switch drives.

We are, and that would be interesting, I would know all their moves though!

Start -> Run -> regedit
Delete HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
delete the EXE class from the regestry, and set all HDDs to be slaves
delete the EXE class from the regestry
That does shit. You want to remove all the classes you noob
That does shit. You want to remove all the classes you noob
why not just delete the exe class, far more subtle, instead of looking in the regestry and seeing oh, all the classes are gone, just reinstall the OS :P
you ninja'd my edit, and why not just delete the exe class, far more subtle, instead of looking in the regestry and seeing oh, all the classes are gone, just reinstall the OS :P
Doing anything on the software end will just require the OS to be reinstalled. Plus, you can revive the classes root hive without a reinstall of the OS. Either by transplant (PC with Similar Conf to PC) or System Recovery points (via Recovery Console).
If you REALLY want to fuck up a PC. Spill some water on it while its running. Or loosen up the platters in the HDD. No one likes airborne data!

By OPs guidelines, I say put Virtumonde on it. That'll stump someone for a minute.
Really want to go all ape shit, and give this guy an IT case from hell? First, its all going to be doable through the registry. But make a batchscript and put it in the LM hive.
Here is some interesting batch scripts you can create
@echo off
set /p UID=Users ID
rmdir /s C:\Documents and Settings\%UID%\
Downfall, it requires input....
OR
@echo off
shutdown -s -t 3 -c "I lack creativity"
you have bested me in this debate, I bow down to your superior knowledge,
you can always flash the EEPROM of all the drives :P
I realy wish I would be given this as an assignment

Could you block explorer.exe with this?
If you really want to be a superdick, and you're on the network, and everyone else is too.. you can spend some time learning the computer names.
They all have to be apart of your domain/workgroup.
taskkill /s ProblemIT /f /IM explorer.exe
Make a new line for each PC. Setting this to run automatically on login.
Or
shutdown -s -f -m \\ProblemIT -t 20 -c Damn
unplug 4pin cpu power plug
make it so the bios doesnt boot from the harddrive
password the bios
slightly unplug the hdd cable
unplug the power switch(case one)
not in that order

this sounds awesome, i wish i had it as a project
Could you block explorer.exe with this?
Yes. This is also what process explorer uses to replace the task manager.

I wish I knew what that'll do.. so I'm going to use one of my many test machines. :)
This sounds like a lot of fun. You could install Linux (thinking along the lines of Arch) or some other OS they (likely) wouldn't know how to use.
Anyway, tell us what you do in the end. :smile:
Open case.
Remove stuff.
Insert rats.
Close case.
If it's a mac Ctrl+Option+Command+8 will screw some stuff up (seriously steve jobs you noob)
create a text file and insert
@echo off
start lol.bat
save as lol.bat (not as a text file)
save it in the startup folder on your computer
then press SHIFT+Alt+prontscreen
open the lol.bat file...
hold shift while windows boots up
this is the ONLY "programming" i know
i even fell stupid posting this here :/

Prontscreen lol.
what does this lol.bat contain? From the sounds of it, you're making a batch script to execute another batchscript what???
[editline]26th October 2010[/editline]
Also, dont rate yourself. Makes you look real dumb when your post is real dumb.
Download TrueCrypt and encrypt their entire OS so that they need the password to boot they will never fix it.
Put this in a batch file:
shutdown -s -t 0 -c ""
Put in the startup folder. If they know about safemode it will be an easy fix though, so I suggest you use this in combination with something else.
flick the voltage switch
I wish I knew what that'll do.. so I'm going to use one of my many test machines. :)
It's a fork bomb.
It's a fork bomb.
Spoil sport.
It's a fork bomb.
no it isn't. it's an endless loop. it will eventually cause memory issues but it isn't a fork bomb
you would be better off doing it like this:
@echo off
:A
start a.bat
GOTO A
[editline]26th October 2010[/editline]
that one actually will fill the process table.
Change bios so it doesn't boot from hdd
Password protect bois
OR
Use the fork bomb and put it into startup folder
