[release]$2,000 diamond ring dropped in Salvation Army kettle
By Brian Hamacher, NBCMiami.com
The holiday spirit is alive and well in Miami after an anonymous donor dropped a diamond ring into a Salvation Army kettle Friday.
Miami-Dade Salvation Army Capt. Linda Payton said her office received a call around 1 p.m. from a woman who wanted to remain anonymous.
"She said that she had just left something in the kettle in front of Kmart and that it was something special," Payton said.

Payton said she personally went to the Kmart in Pinecrest to retrieve the kettle and bring it back to the office.
"Inside the kettle was, wrapped in a rubber band, a $50 bill and inside the $50 bill was a note, and inside the note was a ring," Payton said.
"They need more than I. Do good! A Friend," the simple note read.
The ring, which features two diamonds and a sapphire, was immediately appraised at $2,000, Payton said.
It was the second time in two years that something "special" had been dropped in a Salvation Army kettle in the area.
Last year a gold nugget, which was later auctioned for $4,000, was found with a similar note.
"It's just wonderful for the community, we're just the conduit, they're the ones who will receive it," Payton said.[/release]

wasn't there a thread about the salvation army being horrible bigots and homophobes
wasn't there a thread about the salvation army being horrible bigots and homophobes
depends on the area, i think
depends on the area, i think
Which, if I remember from the thread correctly, the US Salvation Army was one of the bigoted parts.

Well, hopefully the money gets put to good use.

I think it was in new york, where if any state congress bill was slated to pass that benefited gay people in any way they would threaten to close their soup kitchens, which thousands of homeless people relied on.
so yeah fuck them.
I don't think i've ever seen any effects of the Salvation Army anywhere. There's still homeless people, there's still hungry people, and the numbers aren't dropping any time soon.

Yeah I don't think the SA does shit really.

I don't think I've ever seen any effects of organisations devoted to helping stop poverty. There's still people dying of starvation in third world countries.

I was collecting once (for something called the Red Shield appeal, basically raising money for the Salvation Army for some reason) and I happened upon someone who had served in Vietnam. He recounted that the Salvation Army was always there with cups of tea, and (basically) he was very grateful for it.
A little thing like that makes me think that they're not just sitting around playing basketball or something

this is a really simplistic and actually outright retarded way of evaluating any charitable organization/social policy/anything ever
Because a single charity organization can make poverty disappear.

To be honest, I think it's because the general public really doesn't care what happens in non-developed countries.
It's not nice, but you know it's true.

i remember my brother telling something like this i didn't think it was true though
Charitable donation given to charity
Facepunch goes nuts that they're homophobes.
At least they had the sense to put a note saying that they didn't accidentally drop it in with it
this is a really simplistic and actually outright retarded way of evaluating any charitable organization/social policy/anything ever
That being said, you have to wonder what happens to the paid administration when poverty is ended.

lol, bet there would be a difference if you got rid of all the charities in the world

It's also because the companies are relying on shit food distribution models
the problem isn't that they don't have enough food, they don't have the massive infrastructure to provide plenty of jobs to provide income to buy food
it's sad that people have to report good things like this happening
why can't this be like a everyday occurance.
it's sad that people have to report good things like this happening

Because then it wouldn't be reported on?
Because then it wouldn't be reported on?
which then would make it normal.
which it should be. people should donate stuff to poor.

i don't think people generally have $2000 rings to give away

They care up to the point where it interferes with them getting access to luxuries provided by the exploitation of these countries.
Think of the good not the bad for fuck sake facepunch.
For once i can rate friendly without sexual assault being the title, truly this is time of christmas.
Would be better to donate that ring directly to someone about to lose his or her house.
Thousands would starve if not for the SA.
They may be bigoted, but they gave my mother Christmas presents when her mother could not afford them.
I always make sure I donate at least a dollar whenever I see a collector.

Yeah because it's dumb shit.
Thousands would starve if not for the SA.
Yeah but they're bigots so fuck the help they give people :downs:
