'Get Out' film called 'anti-white' and 'racist' by some viewers
Critics have high praise for Get Out, comedian Jordan Peele's directorial debut. Yet some "rotten tomatoes" are slamming the satirical horror film for its so-called "anti-white" and "racist" portrayal of white characters. The discussion has generated a whopping 11 pages worth of comments from users. While the average audience rating is 4.5 stars out of 12,583 user ratings, there's a very vocal group online that clearly hates the movie.
Lots of full blog pieces bring written about the movie as well in searches
Well no shit, the whole premise of the movie is built around racism. Im real keen on seeing it.
I thought it was about a affluent rich people who don't understand how to connect properly with those outside of their neighborhood? Like, not to get into spoilers, but the motivations of the antagonists in the film aren't about them getting slaves.
No way, its directed by Peele?
it's satirical? Just looked like a typical horror movie from thr commercials i've seen

From what I've heard from reviewers, it's part satire, part horror, part commentary on race relations.
it looked very mediocre from the beginning, no idea why its getting so much praise in general tbh
well for starters you haven't watched it

It was written and directed by Jordan Peele, so it has undertones of his comedy while hitting the race issues in a clever manner

I haven't seen it, but it looks like it's trying something new, and is also socially conscious or whatever. Quality has never mattered when it comes to hype.
I just wish A Cure for Wellness got more attention.

The trailer was very good imo but didn't reflect the movie accurately cause it's 100% serious while the movie isn't

Yeah it genuinely looks like a great movie.
This movie blew my mind and I was very critical of it going in since it has a 100% on rotten tomatoes. It's a nod to older horror films while also having very tasteful humor. The plot is great, and the score is beautiful. I hate horror but this is the La La Land of the horror genre in the way that it's nostalgic of old horror but a pushes the envelope of pyschological horror.
The racial commentary never goes overboard.
I was already pretty interested in seeing the movie, but after hearing you people talk about it and seeing the video a couple posts up, my interest in it has actually exponentially increased.
I actually thought it was pretty damn good, and I'm very aware of things that are racist "in the opposite direction". People try to silence people who hold these viewpoints often, but in this case I feel like it's a huge overreaction to call this movie racist. It mostly makes fun of the stigma between interracial couples that some middle-aged and older white Americans still hold.
I went in expecting a bunch of generic horror tropes, but the movie surprised me a lot. Main character is surprisingly competent and properly paranoid at the situation he's in, given the racial background of the community he's visiting.
The movie does portray racism but its not the offensive stereotypical version you see in some shitty comedy movies.
I wonder if we even watched the same movie.
I watched the trailer a few months back and it's the first movie trailer that actually made me want to see the movie. I'm pretty excited for it.
This movie is so damn good. I was entertained for every moment, and it managed to be a lot more intelligent than you might expect. I love how the big bad racists [sp]aren't redneck KKK types as well, but actually comfortable white liberal elites who actually idolize blacks genetically but don't understand them[/sp]
I haven't seen this movie, but for those of you who have watched it, what does this outrage amount to? Thin-skinned conservatives triggered by the fact that the movie portrays *some* rural white people as being ignorant?
Because reading this thread, that's what it sounds like.

I'd honestly say that it's thin-skinned conservatives. The rural white people are definitely not typical of the genre, being portrayed as mostly upper class and educated. If anything would offend, it might just be the extremely blunt way it deals with race. The opening premise is that the protagonist is a black man in an interracial relationship, and how they face challenges due to his race. I wouldn't really call it hamfisted either, it just kind of presents race in an awkward fashion at times.
I'd say it provides a subtle and timely examination of race, while being entertaining and subverting the genre it lays claim to.
I'm going to see it in a few minutes(doubt it, my ride is unreliable as fuck and I'm better off driving myself).
It got extremely high praise from Double Toasted because it's extremely relatable if you've ever been the token minority at a party. I've been the token mexican guy at a lot of parties so I expect to be able to relate to it. I expect my white friends will also enjoy it since they too have been the token white guy at parties

somehow i don't think being the token gay at a party relates
(actually though the movie looks super interesting and I am not one to enjoy horror films)
Just got back from seeing it and the outrage over it is absolutely retarded.
Even if it was legit anti-white, so what. Creative freedom.

I doubt you would say that if the film was anti-black. Double standards.

There's quite a few movies that can be considered anti-black ranging from generic "black guys dies first" cliche down to movies that portray violence and hatred against blacks, with and without valid context.
There is no double standard when it comes to such creative media, get over yourself.

How the hell is a movie trope of the black guy dying first anti black?

Really? Could you name a few that have come out in the past few years? Not just the black guy dies first cliche, but something that actively targets the black audience.

I thought it look pretty unique, never saw a horror delve into race issues

I dunno, I don't agree with anything in Birth of A Nation but I think it has a right to be a film.
