Man charged with Obama assassination attempt:

Haraz N. Ghanbari, AP
A 21-year-old man accused of firing a semiautomatic rifle at the White House last week has been formally charged with attempting to assassinate President Obama.
Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, will be tried in federal court in Washington, D.C., federal officials said.
Law enforcement agents have been investigating whether Ortega-Hernandez fired at least bullets at the White House acted out of hatred for Obama, according to published reports.
"Authorities are investigating the man's mental health and say there are indications he believed attacking the White House was part of a personal mission from God, according to a law enforcement official who spoke with the Associated Press," reported the AP.
The AP added that "there are also indications the man had become obsessed with Obama and the White House, according to two officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing."
Police in Pennsylvania arrested Ortega-Hernandez yesterday on suspicion of firing a semiautomatic rifle at the White House on Friday, with one bullet striking a bulletproof window in the residential part of the building.
President Obama, currently on a trip to Australia and Indonesia, was not home during the incident.
The Secret Service reported that one bullet struck an upstairs window on the south side of the White House -- the residential portion of the building -- but was stopped by bulletproof glass.
Another bullet struck the exterior of the building, though the service has not said exactly where.
This has all taken place since Obama left for a nine-day trip to Hawaii, Australia and Indonesia.

The US secret service has found a bullet from a semi-automatic rifle that smashed a window at the White House, according to officials.
The service has been investigating a shooting that occurred near the White House on Friday. On Tuesday morning, it discovered two bullets, one of which had smashed a window before being stopped by special anti-ballistic glass protecting the building's interior; the other round was found outside the building.
Shots were fired between two vehicles on Constitution Avenue, about half a mile from the White House, shortly after 9pm on Friday. Later the same evening, secret service officials discovered an AK-47 rifle in an abandoned car. Officials could not confirm links between the bullets and the reported shooting. No one was reported injured during the incident.
A US park police spokesman, Sergeant David Schlosser, said on Sunday police were still looking for a suspect, and had issued an arrest warrant for a 21-year-old man, Oscar Ramiro Ortega, in connection with the shooting, for carrying a dangerous weapon.
Ortega is thought to be at large in the Washington DC area, but to have links with Idaho. Police believe he has been in the Washington area for several weeks, Schlosser said. "We want to hear from Mr Ortega. We want to hear his version as to what happened. This will help us fill in the blanks as to what actually occurred on Friday evening, and we would like to resolve this soon."
Police found a car crashed near Theodore Roosevelt bridge, west of the White House, and the Washington monument. Schlosser said investigators had found a semi-automatic weapon and shell casings inside the vehicle. "The actions that Mr Ortega participated in on Friday evening – that being the discharge of a firearm near the White House – is an inherently dangerous activity, and because of that we do want to find Mr Ortega as quickly as possible," said Schlosser. "At this point, we're not certain what his intentions were."
President Barack Obama and the first lady, Michelle Obama, were in California at the time of the shooting. They then travelled to Hawaii for the Asia-Pacific economic co-operation forum. The president is currently in Australia for a 27-hour visit.
Before the shooting, Ortega had been stopped by police in Virginia at around 11am after behaving suspiciously, said Lieutenant Joe Kantor, with Arlington county police. Police took photos of Ortega – who was not arrested – including an image showing one of his tattoos: the word Israel written on his neck. They later released the picture, asking the public for any information on the shooting incident.
Ortega has a history in three states of criminal activity, including drug charges, underage possession of alcohol and assaults on law enforcement officers, police say.
Crazy stuff, luckily the Obamas weren't in there at the time.
Why would someone try and shoot the President if he isn't even in the White House?
If the shooter is that dumb, I don't think there's much to worry about.

It's the thought that counts
Dammit. So the windows are bulletproof now.
We'll just have to wait until he goes out onto his balcony.
I hear cardboard boxes when thickly stacked against eachother can make a bulletproof barrier.
V.A.T.S sucks sometimes.
Somebody was playing a little too much MW3....

I'll tell you someone who would try it. A southern racist redneck who attached a telescope onto his rifle.

true accessorizing right there
someone should give that window a medal
I like Obama, I don't want him to die :(

Good thing Obama wasn't in there they might have curved the bullet round the glass.
I may disagree with our President's political choices at times but he's still the Commander in Chief and no matter how much I dislike him, this guy who shot deserves nothing less than death, if not for the President (which is still treason and he does deserve punishment), then at least for damaging the historical building that is the white house.
Point being, I may not always agree with Obama, but he tries to do what's right and no matter how much I dislike him, his death is not needed.
Also inbefore someone comes in here and tries to tell us it was Islamic terrorists and all Muslims are suicide bombing martyrs.
Nobody deserves death. Nobody.
Being president is probably the closest thing to having real life god mode ever since Kennedy
Eh...maybe.
AK-47
Why do most news stories always call ANY fucking weapon used in a crime an "AK-47" or "Assault Weapon"?

Well maybe because it actually is an AK-47.

I say it was a racist, bigot, extremist, redneck, trailer trash of a fanatical Christian/Muslim hybrid with a mullet and a goatee.
Edit: Also has a turban.
When a bullet goes through a window at the White House, you'd think they'd realize that people aren't happy...

Assassination attempts on the President happen more often than you might think.
With a country the size of the United States, nomatter how good a President you are, there WILL be people out there who want you dead, and of those people, some may actually be willing to take action against you. The Secret Service is constantly investigating leads and potential suspects.
Very rarely do these assassinations succeed, of course.
I am the only one that thinks that the thread title is just excessively sensationalist?

Death penalty for damaging the White House? Are you insane?

Could have been a northern racist redneck, too. You know, from Wyoming or something.

HAH!
More like unlawfully arrest him and lock him up for an indefinite amount of time in some undisclosed location. Cut his means of communication and torture him. Some awesome way to go

Pretty much. They just wanted to say it nicely.
Honestly this doesn't sound like an assassination attempt considering he wasn't even aiming at anyone who could be assassinated. Looks like it was just a dude with a gun trying to be ballsy, or wanted to see what happened, or actually hated the the white house to want to give an angry shot in its direction or something.
