Can somebody recommend me some good codecs to compress .avi videos with ?

I use Virtual Dub to compress my recorded gameplay videos. And I'm currently using a codec named something like Mpeg-4.
And my videos are a tad bit too large. A video that is 20minutes is about 3gb. And it only needs to be 1gb MAX ( according to well compressed video that I have like movies, episodes and such. )
So can somebody help me get the right stuff to compress video well enough ?
Try exporting as WMV, most editing software can but I'm not sure about Virtual Dub. If all else fails just load it up in Windows Movie Maker and export to WMV.
Thanks for your reply.
But this thread is a waste of space right now. After making the thread I found out that the codec that I was already using had a configuration ability. So after fiddling around with that I found the perfect quality/file size ratio.
50seconds of 1080 = 80mb isn't so bad right ?
