Who the hell is he? Well he's this motherfucker right here. It's hard to tell exactly what genre he plays. I'd say experimental blues would be the closest, well at least after Swordfishtrombones. Everything before that he calls his "pseudo-jazz barfly period". The most distinct part of his music is his voice. His growly hobo voice that sounds like it smoked 99 Marlboros and got run over by a truck. Think death metal growls but more intelligible. For a first album I'd recommend Rain Dogs. It quite varied It has it's weird jazzy stuff, weird bluesy stuff, weird rock stuff, and weird pop stuff on it. Swordfishtrombones is very good as well, though Rain Dogs is easier to get into. You either love it or hate it, and if you hate it because Tom Waits is too badass for you then you're a pussy. Okay then lets listen to some songs. I've only heard Swordfishtrombones and Rain Dogs so I apologize to die-hard Tom Waits fans if I heave anything good out. Tom Waits is one of my favourite singers. Check out his Bone Machine album. It's amazing, and full of those badass qualities we all love.
