BBC: The US military teaching 'total war' on Islam.
America's top military officer has condemned a course
taught about Islam at one of America's top military schools as "totally
objectionable".
It is not surprising. The story, first
broken by Wired, is fairly astonishing, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs
of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, must be furious.
The course taught officers there was no such thing as moderate Islam and that
they should consider the religion their enemy.
It advocated "total war" against all the world's Muslims, including possible
nuclear attacks on the holy cities of Mecca and Medina and the wiping out
civilian populations.
The Pentagon has confirmed the course material found on their website is
authentic.

'Something weird'
As far as I can see this is not intended in any sense as a rather sick
academic exercise in stretching the bounds of what could be thought. It is
actually what the officer teaching it believes.
In other words: completely nutty stuff that would disgrace the wilder fringes
of the blogosphere.
So, not surprisingly, Gen Dempsey has ordered a full investigation into what
other US military schools might be teaching about the religion.
The voluntary course aimed at senior officers was taught at the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk,
Virginia, for a year.
Gen Dempsey described the course as "counter to our values of appreciation
for religious freedom and cultural awareness" and "just objectionable,
academically irresponsible".
It came to light when one of the officers on the course complained last
month. There is now an investigation into how the course was approved and why it
was part of the curriculum.
A lieutenant colonel has been suspended from teaching, but for the moment
keeps his job. The Pentagon hopes a full report will be out by the end of the
month.
What does seem rather surprising is that all those commanders, captains and
colonels must have sat through the course and not felt the need to tell someone
that something rather weird was going on.
What a brilliant mentality to foster.

It looks like its being dealt with, however
Islam caused 9/11! they are enemies of God and Jesus Christ! god bless america

What fundies think in a nutshell.
What a shitty thing to teach. Although, the people who volunteered for such a class would probably be crazy racists anyway. Good thing it's being dealt with.

I wish that bad reading was still a rating.

I wish they had a close reading rating.

Its scary that so many of these 'crazy racists' occupy senior ranks in the US military.
It looks like its being dealt with, however
I would be more concerned that its a signifier of a underlining problem.
They're just anticipating the next game by Creative Assembly.
How ironic, next they suggest launching a new crusade.

I find it depressing that I've been studying Travel Writing, and the rhetoric on the middle east and islam hasn't changed in over 800 years.
Every culture has underlying attitudes and alot of people ready to rationalise and explain for them.

So basically you just grouped all fundamentalist Christmas into one category saying they're all narrowminded..you literally just did the same thing that class did...good job rocket surgeon.

I will go out on a limb and say that fundamentalists are narrow minded. Since that is what fundamentalism means by definition.
So basically you just grouped all fundamentalist Christmas into one category saying they're all narrowminded..you literally just did the same thing that class did...good job rocket surgeon.
okay what the fuck is a rocket surgeon

I'm a Christmas.
I bet most of the people in the class just thought "As long as I get my credit for this class and my military career moves forward, I don't give a shit what that guy says."
Its scary that so many of these 'crazy racists' occupy senior ranks in the US military.
I know. The military is an unfortunately conservative organization.
Replace their guns with swords and they'll be us swedes a thousand years ago.
I know. The military is an unfortunately conservative organization.
I think it's a fundamental flaw in an organization that runs off of neutralizing people that you will eventually be totally choc-a-bloc with people who enjoy that kind of work, and unfortunately a conservative way of thinking promotes the qualities you'd normally find in that kind of person.
okay what the fuck is a rocket surgeon
I'm a Christmas.
my consolences. i used to be christmas but thanks to 12 step i am now an easter
Props to the officer who blew the whistle on this.
Fundamentalist christmas sounds pretty great. Celebrate the gift of giving and egg nog all year round
I hope we hear about this in American news.
We won't though.
Oh come on, Christianity and Islam are very similar.
Why can't we celebrate the similarities instead of warring over the differences?
