On Granville Street, one of downtown's main shopping thoroughfares, other fans lit bonfires, but were relatively peaceful.
With Vancouver trailing Boston in the third period, disheartened Canucks fans began flooding out of the official party zone near the site of the shellacking.
TransLink, the Metro Vancouver transit authority, reported major crowds at the Granville, Stadium and Vancouver City Centre stations for its Skytrain light rail system, with heavy loads on all trains.
Other disappointed fans were streaming to the bars on nearby Granville Street -- and some were acting rowdily on Georgia Street, though there have been no reports of any violence akin to the 1994 riots that hit the city in the wake of the Canucks Stanley Cup loss that year.
Earlier, downtown came to a standstill as tens of thousands Canuck fans massed in front of large viewing screens and packed bars to take in the critical contest.
Crowds resembling an enormous river of Canucks blue were so large police had to close off adjacent streets to handle the overflow. Fans who arrived late could barely see the action, despite the size of the jumbotrons.
Police estimated the downtown crowd at more than 100,000, a Vancouver record seven games of the Stanley Cup finals.
But not all was fun and games. Some families found the numbers and some rowdy elements too much for their kids.
Tamara Davidson decided to leave after watching worked-up crowds wrench her 11-year old son from her grasp.
“Too many people, not enough crowd control,” she said, after her son Allan, and his father, Allan Sr., escaped to find a quiet spot for them to catch their breath.
The chaos came moments after security guards opened up a previously-closed gate into the viewing area, allowing hundreds more into a location that was already crammed to capacity.
oh my, canadian facepunchers in vancouver, could you please keep us up to date?
wanna know if it's gonna end up like the riots of 94.
It's pretty crazy down here to be honest. I'm a few block off granville, and there's just people everywhere, all of them partying and rioting. Couple of cars have been flipped. Couple of big fires started.
:canada:
Not surprised. If Americans do bad at football they can always hope for better results from their favorite basketball or baseball team but if Canadians have their hockey team do bad, they don't have anyone to fall back on.
Gotta love Vancouver.
What a fucking joke. These people need to find something better to do with their sad, pathetic lives other than riot over a sport.
I left Downtown Vancouver near the end of the first, everybody was drunk and acting stupid, pushing everyone around and all. You could tell by how the people were acting that if we lost there would be a riot.

Not sure if you understand that hockey is basically a religion in Canada.
I don't like hockey :saddowns:

It's still stupid.

You ain't Canadian, eh?
Oh god, this worries me a bit.

Well, sports are stupid. Will I be killed if I say this there? Probably.
I'm fucking sick of my country. Everyone here is a fucking hockey cunt. Hockey isn't even a good sport, my entire family is fucking Vancouver crazy. I am so tired of it, they never shut the FUCK up
They are just upset that Americans beat them in hockey.
All this over a fucking SPORT... Oh my god.
I'm rooting for Boston, seeing as they're the only team with a Canadian from every province.
Not to mention that Vancouver's team is owned by an American and consists mainly of Europeans.
this wouldn't have happened if boston just lost. This mess is on your hands BOSTON!
How is it Boston's fault that a bunch of no life pricks are starting a riot for no reason?
I've got a couple of friends in Vancouver right now. Their comments on facebook are basically that shit has hit the fan.

Don't pin this shit on Boston, it's your butthurt fans that are rioting.
I never thought I'd be ashamed of my city like this. Seriously, grow the fuck up.
This is funny, i wonder if Vancouver can riot as hard as Montreal.
Snip

Look at the teeny-tiny flag below my avatar, eh?
Well, apparently the tear gas is starting.
I bet you were serious. Now you are like "LOL ITS A JOKE I KEED I KEED"
Okay, I find it really fucking hard to take his post seriously. How could one even think that such a post is serious? It's obviously a joke.
Well i knew Vancouver would overreact. It was coming. But im glad Boston won.
Just because sports are popular with other people doesn't make it dumb.
