Roselly Rolon got her daughter, Alexis, an Apple iPhone 5C for peace of mind in case of an emergency. But the Northeast Philadelphia mother never expected the smartphone to be the source of trouble.
On Friday morning, however, the family claims just that happened. As the 12-year-old walked to school, she said the popular smartphone caught fire in the pocket of her pants.
"All I saw was smoke coming out and then it was my phone. So I threw it on the ground — my butt was, like, burning," the girl recalled.
LiPo technology is prone to fires and explosions when treated badly or a bad batch occurs. not limited to iPhones, even remotely. not even limited to phones.
I have a pile of Samsung GS3 batteries that are 2-3 times the size that they should be on a shelf in my office
Damn thats not good news for Apple
don't expose LiPo to flexing, extreme heat or cold, water or overcharging and they'll be fine. please replace your batteries as soon as you notice swelling and dispose of them properly, because they can cause real damage
Apple have replacement programs for swelling LiPos regardless of warranty status
Things to not expose LiPo or Li-ion batteries to: anything.
It's a miracle we haven't all died yet because of batteries.

How exactly am I meant to see my battery is swelling when I can't take the phone apart?
This is one of the reasons why I hate all phones that do that these days, including the one I have right now (dad passed it onto me after he bought a new one).

To be fair, that's inherent property of pretty much any high density energy source which is meant to provide quite high power output rapidly. It's inherently going to be a bit volatile, that's just physics.
Wait didn't something similar happened not so long ago? I remember it being posted on facepunch too.

You'll notice either the screen or the back of the phone swelling up, no need to take out the battery to check
you'll notice if an iphone is swelling. the screen lifts out from the side assembly and you can press it in a little. i think a lot of people don't realise that's what causing the screen to lift though, and how dangerous it is
this girl probably either treated her phone poorly or got a very bad batch
You'll notice either the screen or the back of the phone swelling up, no need to take out the battery to check
By then it's probably nearly already too late. If your phone happens to be in some sort of a medium to high quality case (think Otterbox), then by the time you notice stuff on the back, it's almost certainly too late.
doesn't this only happen in absolutely extreme heat? or can having your phone in the sun cause this

It was in her back pocket when it caught fire so I'm putting my money on that she always has it there, sits on it and damaged the battery that way

What is too late exactly, the battery would've been damaged in the first place and since it hasn't exploded/caught fire yet you at least know to replace it and not put it in your pocket/on the charger

I wouldn't go so far as to say it is common, but it happens occasionally and similar things have happened before.
It's absolutely mindblowing how much energy these little motherfuckers are capable of releasing

I think it's because Apple was smart enough to slip in a feature unnoticed whereby the battery explodes in your pocket if it detects if anyone under the age of 13 is using it

I suggest having those properly disposed of before they burn down your office.

Heat shouldn't matter, they'll just shut themselves down if they get too hot. If you keep heating them it could explode, but I doubt sunlight could get a battery hot enough for that.
This was likely a fault. Safeties in the battery are designed to prevent this, but they will catch fire if something goes really wrong. It's a good alternative to all the energy being released at once in an explosion.
don't expose LiPo to flexing
You mean like bending? :v:
Maybe they should stop letting artsy fartsy fancy pants designers design the phones and instead let engineers design stuff that is actually made to take the stress of everyday use and not just sit in a display case for people to glare at.
I'd rather walk around with an ugly as fuck unpainted brick of plastic looking like a science fiction wizard than get permanent scarring because of things containing dangerous materials being flimsy as fuck for aesthetic reasons.

yeah, a girl with her phone under her pillow got first degree burns to her face and neck when her iphone lit up

This is actually scary. I wonder if i'm safe from a sudden explosion of a phone.
Got Oneplus and it has quite powerful battery.

just don't stab it and if you notice any swelling replace the battery

Paranoia of my phone exploding in my pocket bothers me sometimes.

If I end up getting the 9000mAh Zerolemon battery for my G3 that may be a fun way of disposing of it...
Sadly Oneplus has embedded 3100mAh Lipo battery. I guess i should avoid sleeping with phone charging next to me at least lol.
(For the record I kid, I've spent many many hours properly recycling electronics from previous jobs)

just use an appropriate power supply for charging and leave it on a desk.
putting phones under pillows is stupid

Never mind these phones have been dropped from multi-story buildings and still functioned (just ask TH89) and get dropped on concrete or marble all the time without shattering. They're built for more than display, iPhones or otherwise.

There is no demand for ugly phones in the west
