A white whale that came close to mimicking a human voice may have been trying to make contact with people, according to scientists.

Newly released audio from the male whale named Noc, who died five years ago at the National Marine Mammal Foundation in San Diego, shows the animal modifying its calls when in the company of humans. Scientists previously thought whales made sounds much different to those of humans but a new study led by researcher Sam Ridgway suggests they may be able to modify their speech, according to The Independent. “Our observations suggest the whale had to modify its vocal mechanisms in order to make the speech-like sounds,” Mr Ridgway said. “Such obvious effort suggests motivation for contact.” Mr Ridgway and other researchers initially observed Noc’s calls in 1984, and said further study revealed the rhythm and frequency of the whale's voice was sometimes similar to humans. He said the speech was very unusual for a white whale and “clearly an example” of the creature learning from humans. Noc’s speech-like calls were only recorded when other humans were in its enclosure, and were never observed when it was interacting with other whales.

Video in source source
I wonder what porpoise the whale could have for doing this.
If whales were discovered on Mars, then the scientists at NASA would tried to understand what they said. Instead, since they were discovered on Earth, it takes us 5 years from a whale's death to figure out they were trying to communicate to us...
It wants to mate

Did fucking shamu sneak onto the shuttle?
That whale is doing a shitty job of imitating us
That whale is doing a shitty job of imitating us
Baby steps, my friend.

I knew Dolphins and Whales were intelligent but daamn.
Meanwhile some distances away whalers kill them for meat. Which makes me sad.

It's like those "goat yelling like man" videos. It's concerning.
I just wish I could mimic whale voice.

am i the only one who laughed hysterically when i heard it?
That is the creepiest fucking sound I have ever heard. "DUHURAR HUHA DURA HURAHUH"
This is eerily similar to the worlds first known audio recording of a human voice, just clearer sounding.

Carl Sagan learnt to mimic whale voice. Well, very badly.
Mr Ridgway and other researchers initially observed Noc’s calls in 1984
Hmm... I guess being human isn't requisite to being an Orwell fan. But in all seriousness it scares me a little to think that whales like these may be more sentient than we initially thought yet so many of them die by human hands each year simply out of sport.

The only human I know that talks like that is a politician.
it begins
A whale talked to me!
it begins
The whale died 5 years ago. It ended. Hopefully other whales develop beyond their limits of intelligence and break the language barrier between species.
If a whale was found on mars we'd be wondering why and HOW the fuck a whale got on mars. Did fucking shamu sneak onto the shuttle?
Infinite Improbability drive of course
Infinite Improbability drive of course
I'll withhold any anxiety until Curiosity finds a pot of petunias.
The whale died 5 years ago. It ended. Hopefully other whales develop beyond their limits of intelligence and break the language barrier between species.
First species in the known universe to break a language barrier between species is an aquatic mammal that was once, and in some places still is a commodity. Common humanity, step it up.
