"Racism, we are not cured of it. And it's not just a matter of it not being polite to say nigger in public," Obama said in an interview for the podcast "WTF with Marc Maron." "That's not the measure of whether racism still exists or not. It's not just a matter of overt discrimination. Societies don't, overnight, completely erase everything that happened 200 to 300 years prior." The jarring comment comes as the nation is engaged in a debate over the role of race after a white supremacist killed nine African-Americans last week in a historically black church in Charleston. They also reflect a growing willingness for Obama to discuss race during the final years of his presidency. Why the fuck are you rating it winner. This man was in the literal best position in the world to talk about racism, collusion, hate and bias, and he pretty much said nothing until about a year ago other than vague passing references. It's great now that he has nothing left to table that he can be all candid and airy about it; this shit should have been said in his first year, and places like FOX should have been put on immediate blast for questioning his heritage in the first goddamn place. He was capable of sending a crystalline clear message at any time of where we are and where we should be, and he took his goddamn sweet time doing it.

Just because it's something they always should have done doesn't make it bad when they decide to finally do it.
Marc Maron got to interview the president? Wow. That's something else.
Link to podcast is dead I think.

He's been playing it safe, because he doesn't want to feed the racist assholes.
Well I gotta give Obama credit for this one.
Marc Maron got to interview the president? Wow. That's something else.
From what I hear, getting a chat with the president is actually easier than most people think.
Link to podcast is dead I think.
sites getting hammered
He's been playing it safe, because he doesn't want to feed the racist assholes.
Well thats dumb. In the future it would have been seen as a good thing to do. As an elected leader you should never be trying to appeal to people who would never vote for you.

It's another thing to do so while creating a shitton of unnecessary controversy.
He's right too racism is way more complicated than not using some word But he's pretty much saying something everyone should know by now, and something that I know facepunchers know. The fact, however, that he says it, shows that people are ignorant.
It's one thing to push an agenda that fixes many issues in the american government and society. Imo the biggest obstacle to getting over racism is how class is racialized in this country. I mean if you ever notice, some white people feel comfortable using the n word when it's more than just skin color, it's about class too. So a poor black is one (the excuse given is that he acts like it), but a middle class black dude in a suit never will be. And to boot the n word always had a class connotation ('you're my n****') and I think it's kept alive today by the fact whites dominate the countryside (which ties in to the whole white male property owner thing, the people who founded our republic), and after white flight blacks dominate the 'liberal cities'. So you'll notice conservatives (who have hated the progressive cities for a century now) saying 'liberal cities are burning' and 'liberals are keeping blacks on the plantation of poverty through welfare'. So racism seems to have a lot to do with class, the effect of class on the difference between the city and the countryside, and the effect of that difference on how the left and right are divided. Then we arrive at the right wing conclusion that the Left/anti-racists are anti-white, basically what the shooter wrote.
Elected representatives are supposed to cause controversy. If they don't they get nothing done.
Preferably you make these changes without starting riots that just leave a deep seated hatred of the other side regardless of which side "wins".

The winner ratings doesn't necessarily mean people are happy with how he address this issue in the past, they are just glad he's somewhat addressing it now, within the scope of this little quote right here.
Elected representatives are supposed to cause controversy. If they don't they get nothing done.
yes, that's why we have Donald Trump currently for president I see
I listened to the whole thing, and it was just the liberal talking points with a whole lot of meaningless platitudes. Obama's not going to help anything by giving an exclusive interview to a liberal idealogue's podcast. My favorite parts: - "the other side is opposed to rational, fact based arguments." Nice job breaking down those political barriers Mr. President! - The government needs to step in and be parents to kids in poor areas by giving them "love," "meals," "engagement," and "words" with pre-school. That's the way to improve these areas. In this end, this is pandering to the left. It's a liberal president, talking to a liberal host, about liberal talking points and meaningless niceties.
- "the other side is opposed to rational, fact based arguments." Nice job breaking down those political barriers Mr. President!
Well prominent Libertarians are calling school lunches and universal healthcare slavery...

Which I would say is almost self evident. When a man argues against the near totality of the scientific community with "it's snowing outside, here's a snowball", they're being unreasonable. Or they're retarded. Or deaf. Or all of the above.
"love," "meals," "engagement," and "words" with pre-school. That's the way to improve these areas.
But, it is tho.
when the right denies basic shit like climate change I think it's fair to claim that they're opposed to fact-based arguments
Especially when a lot of right is trying to make the entirety of America based around Christian ideals rather than shit that actually works in modern society anyone who actually thinks religion and state should mix in any way clearly shouldn't be in politics of any form
Lmao at the start. "Yeah I remember through somewhat of a haze.. It was college, y'know"
when the right denies basic shit like climate change I think it's fair to claim that they're opposed to fact-based arguments
I'm sure the right might say the same about Obama and gun control (the fact that there's no reason to believe the democrats idea of gun control would have any positive effect). The point is that he's obviously not trying to actually improve the political climate with statements like that. You don't get to pretend to close the divide, and then tell anyone who disagrees with you that they're either non-thinking or evil. (a great substitute for someone actually trying to mend a divide might be "misguided" or "badly informed") [editline]22nd June 2015[/editline]
While I'm against stereotyping everyone who identifies as conservative as unreasonable
Well, that's literally what he did and what I was criticizing. I don't care what he actually thinks about conservatives. It's the hypocrisy of pretending to be a peace maker, while also saying things like that.
do you not think there is a difference between all conservatives and a specific group of politicians?
anyone who actually thinks religion and state should mix in any way clearly shouldn't be in politics of any form
Why?
Why?
this explains so much
Why?
Of course it's the resident bible thumper who'd be the one to ask that question.
