What a disgusting individual. It's a good thing they caught her and not that creep stalking and harassing her. Now I can sleep knowing that the world is a better place.
I understand that it's technically theft, but this is a bit insane. When you rent a video, you're usually required to use a credit card, so that if you do steal it, they can charge you the price of the video. This being a VHS, it might be a bit before that became standard... But you still had to put down a small deposit with the video. There are systems in place to prevent this, why would you bother with an arrest?
Glad to see we have our priorities straight.
What you guys seem to be forgetting is that she still broke the law. She doesn't get some magic free pass because she was reporting a different crime. Nowhere in the article does it say she didn't get to press the stalking and harassment charges.

Shoplifting of goods over $100 is a felony, this is a citation. She shouldn't have been arrested, by any means. Dragged down to the station and forced to pay the fine, at most.
Meh. Stealing is stealing. If she didn't go to report someone the fine would get higher and higher.
