Congressman Jared Polis (D-CO) knows a thing or two about the internet. After graduating from Princeton, Polis proceeded to make millions dabbling in e-commerce, founding sites such as American Information Systems, bluemountain.com, and Proflowers.com. In sharp contrast to many of his colleagues (one of whom famously explained the internet "is not a big truck -- it's a series of tubes"), Polis not only understands how the internet works, but also why it functions as it does.As lawmakers debate the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), an act Polis has criticized for "the harm it could do to legitimate online commerce and innovation, free speech, cybersecurity, and the technical infrastructure of the internet," the representative deserves kudos for highlighting some of the legislation's more outlandish aspects. Especially, Polis believes, attempting to apply SOPA to the pornography industry. In a December 15th speech (watch above), Polis highlighted this issue by entering into the Congressional Record a song from Broadway's Avenue Q titled "The Internet Is For Porn." Polis stopped short of reading aloud the lyrics, clarifying "my amendment would simply ensure that American tax dollars are not used to protect the intellectual property rights of pornographic or obscene websites," but the lyrics are safely in the record.
The song mentioned:

I'm surprised that they allowed the use of the reference, well done Rep. Polis
well uuuuuh
[editline]20th December 2011[/editline]
I'm kinda just going through the video right now.
It would be nice if they made a bill that they didn't have to DEFEND people from.
A politician who knows what he's talking about? Unheard of.

Give this man a fucking medal.
Okay then. Got the solution if SOPA is semi fixed to not include porn: Put Information on incredibly softcore porn.
Oh wow :v:
GRAB YOUR DICK AND DOUBLE CLICK!
Somebody make a fake softcore porn site, that works as a proxy for us Americans to get to facepunch.
Was watching the stream and right when he mentioned porn, 15 new posts in the SOPA thread.
"it's a pornographer's wet dream"
:v:
Wait so SOPA hasn't passed yet?
Thank you Mr. Chair
Wait so SOPA hasn't passed yet?
not yet, they're rescheduled for wednesday.
Hopefully there is no "yet". It better not pass.
I like how the video shows they only want to protect certain copyright... that to me is bullshit. If you want to protect something it should be all or nothing. But no lets just protect big movie and music. Fuck the little guy and the stuff we don't like.
I'm pretty sure Obama said that he would veto this, although he's a terrible promise keeper.

Even if he did, there is the little problem that congress can just hold another vote to override the veto.

That seems something of a flaw in the system, since it means anyone who would get significant gain from their vote will basically be saying the same thing. I can understand wanting to make sure your president isn't batshit insane and giving a way to actually oppose him, but I think the system should have been made more to predict the natural downward spiral of a corrupt man voting for money.
But I'm just spitballing here.

I don't see why Facepunch would be blocked. There's nothing piratey here or you get banned.

I thought I heard he wouldn't. Hope you're right though.

He promised to pocket veto it, which negates their ability to override his veto.
It remains to be seen if he does so, however.
I don't see why Facepunch would be blocked. There's nothing piratey here or you get banned.
The mere chance that something could be posted here is all they would need to nuke FP for Americans under SOPA.

Naw, that was the NDAA. Y'know, the one that'll let you get arrested without trial if you're a "threat" to the government.
I think it's sad we're actually at a point where we actually have to ask what's worse: censorship, or inevitable perversion of justice?

Are you kidding me?
Congress never gets enough people to agree for a 2/3rds vote to override a veto.

I think he promised to pocket it anyway, and he's not an idiot - he knows what'll get him votes, which is why he held off on doing a lot of stuff that would have been helpful earlier until everyone knew he was doing it. Knowing Obama, he'll flaunt what he's done, and to be honest, I'll have to thank him for it.

Many of our avatars consist of copyrighted content.
I saw this play while it was on broadway.
Best play ever.
Anyway, SOPA needs to stop here.

I've never really understood what a pocket veto is. It sounds like something that could be abused in the wrong hands so I'm guessing he can only do it once per term or something?

It's part of the executive branches power.

Just read about it in wikipedia. It still confuses me, but I guess if he can do it he'll do it. Is there a source for him saying that he will indeed pocket veto this?
