Texas woman sues PD for forcing her to listen to Rush Limbaugh

[release]Talk about your Monday from hell. Not only did Bridgett Nickerson Boyd's car break down on her way to work, but when she pulled over to the side of the freeway, a sheriff's deputy named Mark Goad pulled behind her, wrote her a ticket for driving on the shoulder, decided to arrest her, followed her to the hospital when her suddenly racing heart prompted a call to paramedics, then took her into custody again after she was treated by doctors and finally drove her to jail.
To make matters worse, Boyd claims in a lawsuit that the handcuffs were put on her wrists painfully tight - she claims she explained to the officer she had just had surgery on her hand - and that she was forced to listen to Rush Limbaugh "make derogatory comments about black people" all the way to the jail. Boyd is African-American.
Because of the incident, which occurred on Oct. 4, 2010, Boyd filed a federal lawsuit Monday against Goad and Harris County alleging defamation, false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, assault and battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
''Deputy Goad was aware that Boyd had not committed a crime and her arrest was without probable cause," according to the lawsuit filed in Houston.
The magistrate who saw her while jailed apparently agreed and dismissed all charges.
A spokesman for Sheriff Adrian Garcia declined to comment on the lawsuit.
Boyd's attorney, Troy Pradia, said she had never been in legal trouble and thought the deputy had pulled up behind her car to help her. She had moved to the shoulder along Beltway 8 near U.S. 288 after her engine started smoking.
Pradia added that he and Boyd, who works in a bank, had hoped the matter would be settled by the sheriff's department after she filed a complaint about Goad's actions.
''They finally said the complaint was not sustained, meaning that it was not disproved but that nothing was proved to have happened," Pradia said. "I don't know why. We're not privy to that."
Pradia said that Boyd had signed the ticket and pointed as much out to the deputy, but that he chose to arrest her regardless.
''The taxpayers pay money for crime prevention," Pradia said. "I don't think she was committing any crime."[/release]http://www.mywesttexas.com/editors_picks/article_c876fd7c-f03c-11e0-a094-001cc4c002e0.html
Poor woman.
Give her a medal.
Why do we allow police departments to investigate themselves for wrongful actions? That's just bound to lead to some bad cops getting off the hook.

Technically the Police Department doesn't investigate it. It's a separate entity within the PD called "Internal Affairs" that is full of police officers with the full time job of investigating police officers for corruption and wrongdoing.
That definitely qualifies as cruel and unusual.
Who else is going to investigate them?
A different nearby department?

Well the problem isn't necessarily IA are not hard enough on the officers(they often hire from out of county or out of state so there is little brotherhood between IA and regular police), but the fact officers form a coalition against IA.
You know how snitching is a number one no-no for criminals? Yea, it's number one no-no for cops too.
Rush Limbaugh is fucking insane. He claims Obama is "purposefully destroying the country to make us equal with the Europeans" :v:

What type of destruction makes something better? I gotta try it some time.
Upon informing Ms. Boyd that when she drives the car, she can choose the radio station, Officer Goad stated that if she would not cease her complaints, that he would turn this thing around and go home.

We have a separate oversight establishment that investigates sensitive issues.
They're corrupt as shit though.

Implying that America is better than Europe. Hilarious.

Another police force, or an independent body. In the UK any police complaint is handled by one organisation that has no connection with any police force. I know you lot have "internal affairs" departments in the US but imo they aren't neutral enough, they are still connected to a police force.

How do you know this? I mean, you may or may not be correct but what lead you to believe it? I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure IA is a completely separate entity that isn't even accountable to the police chief. I think they answer to a central body in the individual states law enforcement, so they aren't held accountable to people who may have a stake in the investigation.
I've also heard that, as a detective or police officer, if you ever even see an IA officer(assuming you know who one even is), it means you or someone you know is in deep shit.

Maybe I have just been misinformed over the years, but everything I have read or heard about IA departments suggest that they fall under the command of the police force they are investigating.
Things like this (From Wikipedia, maybe not the best source) "in many departments, officers working internal affairs are not in a detective command, but report directly to the agency's chief" which to me sounds like they would be paid etc by the force they are investigating.
It does seem a little counter productive to have a police force investigating itself, so maybe I am just misinformed.

The wording makes it sound like IA is an independent agency and an IA officer reports to an IA chief.
Maybe you are right, though. Like I said, I'm no expert. My information may be partially wishful thinking on the way it should be run, rather than how it actually is run.

It seems counter productive? Shit, it is counter productive, no thinking required. Cops are like brothers, and a chief is like a father figure. A father isn't going to can his sons if he can help it. If IA reports to a departments chief, then it needs to be changed so IA reports directly to an IA chief who isn't connected to law enforcement in any way except to investigate and prosecute other law enforcement.

All he talks about when it comes to Europe is "The Euro crisis, European Union bailing out countries, UK unemployment and protests, etc" He blames socialism for all of this. I know this because my mom listens to him :suicide:
