I've recently started working with a legitimate film geek. He has inspired me to start watching movies with real depth, whether philosophical or emotional.
Some of my favorites:
- American Beauty
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
- Synedoche, New York
- What Dreams May Come
- Blueberry
- American History X
- A Beautiful Mind
- Fight Club (obviously)
- Waking Life
There are undoubtedly many, many more, but my memory fails me at the moment.
What are your favorite emotionally/philosophically deep movies? We all love a good mindless action film from time to time, but these movies really leave a mark on your psyche.
Shawshank Redemption.
Damn. How have I still not seen that?
Adding it to my "To Watch" list.
Little miss sunshine <3

I think Network was a very damn good movie.
Also:
Capitalism: A love story
I second shawshank
The haunted (with Lee and Del Toro) is kinda depth.
I put forwards Moon.
The Machinist.
This film was garbage what are you talking about?
All it was was Bale driving around looking like a starving African child and mindfucked. There are better mindfuck films out there like Memento.
I put forwards Moon.
This. Excellent movie that actually requires thought.
Thin Red Line.

Pan's Labyrinth

District 9. Despite watching this in the middle of school, I was shocked by the level of emotion I felt at it.
Which was a lot. Walked home in a trance.
Memento
Session 9
Mulholland Dr.
Jacob's Ladder
Requiem for a Dream
Donnie Darko
Apocalypse Now
Any David Lynch film.
Most David Cronenberg films.
Any Satoshi Kon film.
Any Andrei Tarkovsky film.

Moon is a good one.
I thought The Machinist was alright. Pretty mindfucking. Memento I have yet to watch but plan on doing so in the near future.

How the does this film have depth?
Batman Begins... My son
No questions, just watch it :smug: see how much better it is that The Dark Knight
Once you finish listen to Marvin Gaye's Whats Going On album, then start watching One flew over the cuckoo's nest
Then your life is complete ... FOR NOW :fuckyou:
Twelve Monkeys (directed by Terry Gilliam of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas fame)
The first two Terminator films.
Total Recall has some depth in that the story is open-ended [sp]in that it is never revealed whether the events of the movie are real or a memory implant from Rekall.[/sp]. But it's a Paul Verhoven movie in the style of Robocop and Starship Troopers, so do expect anything more beyond mindless (albeit entertaining) violence.

All those movies have no depth :v:
But they are very good movies :smug:
Moon.
Very much agreed. I would also add Two Lovers as a movie with some depth. It's heart wrenching and very somber at times. It's more of a true life re-enactment, than it is a cliched love story.
EDIT:
If you are feeling as if you need some psychological stimulation, I would recommend Dark City and Richard Linklater's Slacker as well.
Brooklyn's Finest
