• Forced to swim

So, I never really got around to learning how to swim, excluding the 2 times in separate summers I went to 1 on 1 swimming. Now my parents are making me learn from a cousin who is opening classes (he just graduated from high school, swimming varsity captain and all) As you would expect, swimming frightens me a lot considering I have almost drowned multiple times. Yeah, swimming looks fun, I can see that's already enough reason to learn how to, but every encounter with a large body of water usually ends in someone picking me up or me somehow getting out traumatized, not through the use of swimming though. So, any tips on swimming? Keep arms legs moving, don't panic, yeah. But other than that, anything else?
make sure you breathe
The trick to swimming is to always have air in your lungs. Don't try any tricky moves until you're ready, because you need to have great control over your breathing. It's a lot about confidence, so take things slow. When I first started swimming I slowly worked my way to getting my head underwater, and then diving became quite fun and easy. When you're confident being under, it's not as scary to be on the surface.
if you have lots of air in your lungs you float better i think
I learned to swim when I was 4 in an Olympic pool back in my country. My parents were rich in my homeland. Not so much here in the US though.
Hold your breath in and you'll float for the most part.
swimming is about as hard as breathing or blinking once you get the hang of it
Wow how old are you? I don't know anyone that doesn't know how to swim. Oh, and as for advice, it's like learning to ride a bike, once you figure it out, you'll know how to swim easily, but you have to get over that learning barrier. Especially floating on your back, you just have to get over your fears and trust yourself/instructor if you have one.
Uhh yeah I can swim I'm not 10
Keep arms and legs moving? Only if you want to move. You can "swim" and just float around. Don't try swimming like you see people on the olympics swim, that's for speed swimming, not for an easy swim. You'll be so much more likely to swallow some water if you go right for olympics swimming. Floating on your back is easy. Just inhale, and you'll basically float. Distribute body weight accordingly and such. You dont' need to move your arms in full circles or anything either. Just push against the water to go where you want to go.
It's really hard to learn how I learned by jumping in the ~DEEP END OF THE POOL~
suck air in, a lot of air and basically to float move your arms so you're shaped like a cross (straight out) and then cupping your hands like you're drinking water out of a pond, push them down to your sides. Bring them back up without pushing against too much water (usually done by keeping them close to your body) and then repeat i'm honestly a fucking fish running off a dock and diving into the water is one of the most fun experiences in this life; but also dangerous as FUCK a few times I did I ended up diving waaay too deep. I dove about 30-40 feet out of the dock, and when I was out of breath I was about 8 feet below the surface shit sucks just practice in 5 foot water, and bring your feet up
holy shit you're hardcore
Yea dude it was intense I couldn't touch the bottom and I swear I saw a shark ps: op if you panic hold your breath you will float like an aircraft cushion
also when you're swimming make it a habit to have half of your head underwater at all times so you're forced to hold your breath it a) slows your breathing which keeps you calmer and b) gets you acclimated to proper breathing techniques while freestyling [editline]11:48PM[/editline] so keep eyes above water etc
swimming is about as hard as breathing or blinking once you get the hang of it
I love swimming, but my house has no pool and the local pool is usually filled with... morons. Kids and morons.
I can float on my back better than swim, but I can swim good enough to save my life if a boat I'm on sinks.
breathe in lots of water
PS I live in Florida, you can't not swim in Florida. [editline]11:51PM[/editline] :ninja: afoot.

wow, i honestly thought most people knew how to swim
The only tip you'll ever need, ever: If you're going to die, take as many people as you can with you.
Don't be a pussy. Theres always a lifeguard watching and it's just one of those things that you have fun with once you lose fear.
So there's absolutely no middle ground between olympic swimmer and not very good?
I don't get how people can't swim. Just kick around a lot and make sure you hold your breath.
I learned how to swim from Tomb Raider on the PS1.
swimming is about as hard as breathing or blinking once you get the hang of it
This. It's like second nature.
So there's absolutely no middle ground between olympic swimmer and not very good?
Yeah, I'm average. Apparently average is not very good. Then again, compared to Michael Phelps, no one is very good.
Dude. Swimming is awesome. Some things you will get from swimming daily over a long period of time: 1. No more back pain. 2. Leaner, harder muscles. 3. Your chest will expand. 4. Increased self-confidence. 5. Wicked tan. But yeah, swimming is hard if you haven't been familiarized with the water at a young age. Highly recommend you take that lesson, swimming is a great form of exercise that will build healthy long muscle, not the bulky useless muscle you get from body building.
I find it sad people can't swim. Just my opinion.
