Perhaps it's more about the jedi culture dying out during episode 6. There are only a handful of jedi that use the force, it's an old and forgotten culture after all.

The force awakens might indicate that Luke has trained tons of new jedis and that they are far more present in the galaxy than previously. Similar to Episode 1 and 2.

The force in the OT timeline is pretty tame compared to stuff that happened in Star Wars lore though. Some of that's not part of the canon anymore but stuff like what Bane did still is.
