Chris Lilley's six-part ABC TV comedy series Jonah From Tonga follows the life of a 14-year-old schoolboy and his run-ins with family, friends and teachers. Prof"It's just horrible to see that being acted out on the screen there and for people to think that's what Tongan kids do." Professor Lee has spent more than 20 years researching Tongan society, with a particular focus on young people in the diaspora and their relationship with the homeland. "It's just a stereotype of this kind of thuggish, stupid youth which does not in any way represent what Tongan youth are like," he said. Lilley is no stranger to controversy, having previously donned 'black-face' when playing the character S.mouse, an American rapper, in the 2011 series Angry Boys. Professor Lee says it is no longer acceptable for white actors to use dark make-up to play people of another race. "It's not permissible. I think it's appalling and I don't think he should be allowed to do it," she said. "A 40-year-old white man dressing up as a 14-year-old Tongan boy in brown face is just inherently creepy."essor Helen Lee, head of La Trobe University's department of sociology and anthropology, has told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat she was horrified by the show's portrayal of Pacific youth. "I just think it's dreadful. It's just awful. It's creating a terrible stereotype that's just deeply offensive to Tongans," she said. "The comments to his supposed sister, calling her fatty, talking about sexual matters, swearing in front of her is absolutely taboo in Tongan culture. STRAYA' CUNT
But it's totally okay for him to play as a stereotypical, dumb, white private-school girl, right?
Blackface still passes for comedy in Australia
ABC needs a paycut.
This is what happens when Americans witness Australian comedy
The tonga's that were at my school (drop outs) all pretend to be thugs, hanging out at train stations and bus bays.
The tonga's that were at my school (drop outs) all pretend to be thugs, hanging out at train stations and bus bays.
Every single last one of them?
This is what happens when Americans witness Australian comedy
no, chris lilley is just an unfunny cunt
I can agree that blackface is pretty retarded and inst funny at all. Also Chris Lilley's portrayal of Tongan youth is actually accurate, hilariously accurate. Hell, I'm descendant pacific islander, I thought it wasn't offensive at all, and funny as fuck. Then again, people get offended over anything. Guess we need to erect a feelings barrier and ban anything that may offend someone because their feelings might get hurt.
no, chris lilley is just an unfunny cunt
pot calling the kettle black
It's funny how he played a black rapper and used the N-word constantly, but this is the one he gets called racist for
Jesus, those are jokes. People are too sensitive.
I like the part where they fail to mention that one of the running gags is that his entire family, who are also from Tonga, hate him and think he's a dickhead. No sound of mind person watches it and thinks "Yeah, this is what all Pacific Islanders are like".
They kinda do look like 90% of the islanders I saw when I was in school in New Zealand a few years back. But what do I know.

From the two episodes I have watched so far I was quite aware that it was a non serious stereotype.. Then again I have watched pretty much everything Chris Lilley has done so I knew exactly what I was getting myself into by watching it.
no, chris lilley is just an unfunny cunt
Thank fuck summer heights high is over. I can't count the number of desks I saw with dicktation scrawled all over
and for people to think that's what Tongan kids do
I think it would be more effective to teach people that what they see in comedy isn't actually real all of the time.
Thank fuck summer heights high is over. I can't count the number of desks I saw with dicktation scrawled all over
Summer Heights High seemed to infect every year 8 when i was at school, school would start and a new year of kids would start writing dicktation in the toilets and saying stuff like "puck you" and stuff. it's horrible

Surely this character was way more offensive lol.
fuck this guy's ugly.
The only thing that is offensive is how terrible his shows are now.
