University of Oklahoma fraternity shut down after racist chant video goes viral
Even with the national chapter shutting down the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house at the University of Oklahoma, the school president said the university's affiliation with the fraternity is permanently done as a campus group called for the expulsion of fraternity members.
The members have until midnight Tuesday to get their things out of the house, university President David Boren said in a Monday afternoon news conference.
"The house will be closed, and as far as I'm concerned, they won't be back," he said, adding that the university is exploring what actions it can take against individual fraternity members.
A Saturday video showing party-bound fraternity members on a bus chanting a racial epithet found its way anonymously to the school newspaper and a campus organization, which both promptly publicized the nine-second clip.
The students on the bus clap and pump their fists as they boisterously chant, "There will never be a ni**** SAE. You can hang him from a tree, but he can never sign with me."

Well, now there won't be any white people in that chapter either. Equality!
What's the deal with blacks, there isn't any reason to hate them for fuck's sake.
Reddit exploded about this today.
"MUH FREEDOM OF SPEECH!!!!"
...wow.
I literally can't imagine doing or condoning this and I'm just glad they got their proverbial shit kicked in.
Everything my friends who studied abroad told me about fraternities makes me really glad English Universities and colleges don't have them

If you look at different social groups, they often form behind something that they have in common. Sometimes its the place of residency, as in neighborhood friendships, sometimes its to enjoy an event together, as in sports fans, sometimes its to achieve something together, as in a sports team and sometimes people who want to build a social group but don't have something in common have to find a cause which allows them to feel connected. It is quite easy to build a "us against them" sentiment.
tldr: choosing some group or person to hate is a bonding experience for asshats
Have you seen the german movie "Die Welle"/"The Wave"? The dude [sp]that holds up the whole group at the end[/sp] doesn't want to loose the group that allows him to bond with others by having a "us against them" mentality.

im in a fraternity, they aren't nearly as bad as people make them out to be. we mostly just hang out and occasionally have parties and such.
some fraternities are incredibly racist, most aren't. it depends on a lot of things, especially the school though.
SAE was founded at the University of Alabama, and it is the only fraternity founded in the pre-war south. This doesn't surprise me at all. This song probably travelled throughout the nation from there.
What are fraternities anyways? I may be in the US, but I moved here. All that I here about them are bad things, like gangs in education or something
Not all fraternities are bad. Some are professional, some are created as a service opportunity, some for philanthropic purposes, but some are just "party frats" that don't really do anything. The point of fraternities is that they are brotherhoods, people coming together for a common reason. Whether it's to belong or a noble purpose or to party depends on the fraternity.
They should make them do community service where they build houses for blacks who are in need of a home.
Imagine their faces.
Some of the members of SAE probably just didn't say anything, or had to fit in because of being in a fraternity.
Today a guy that was in SAE stood up infront of a 100 person lecture and personally apologized for what happened and that he should have done something.
It still doesn't make it right, but that frat group mentality thing going on.

It's also worth noting that the president of SAE is pretty pissed off about this
There's only a token few frat kids who aren't complete assholes.
Fuck fraternities. They're a waste of time and money.
To be in a frat (at least in my school) you gotta pay $200 a semester. Fuck. That.

Still though, they build a house for a family in need and hopefully get a better outlook and attitude from it. Everybody wins.
But you're right, there are probably some guys there who didn't participate or did so just to fit and not be the subject of ridicule from a lot of frat dudes. It probably falls down to a handful of guys who are uber racists/thought it'd be funny to chant this shit.

Woops didn't mean to quote you, guess I thought it was the regular reply box :v:
But I do agree that community service would help build better character for them.

Really depends on their experiences with them.
Growing up, I only saw a few blacks over 18 years and liked them a good deal.
After living 3 years in the RDU area of North Carolina, USA and dealing with them on a near daily basis, I can say that their actions really turned my views towards them to the negative side.

Well then.
I absolutely detest the "Greek" life at public Universities. I had previously dated an AOII Sorority member and I in effect found myself acquainted with some real shitty people. I never enjoyed going out with this girl because it often meant her 'sisters' or other similar people would tag along or somehow end up involved. The guys tended to be your super dude-brahs who's dad's credit card solves all problems. The girls were all horribly catty--IE, one would leave the room and they would all begin shit talking while she was gone.
Overall, they just weren't nice people. It just wasn't my soup.
The fact that these people pay to have another extra burden (Dues, mandatory meetings/projects, community work, little/big relationships, etc) on top of a work / school schedule is asinine. They're essentially paying for their premier college social experience and that's just sad. I've found that some of the most insecure people join the general frats. I won't say all are terrible, because there are some good organizations out there.

From what I can tell, mostly institutionalized circlejerks.

They're supposed to be "exclusive" clubs made up of male or female members, like being in your own little social club or secret society. But occasionally they somehow end up gaining a gang-like or cult-like mentality and fuck up, those are the ones you see on the news. Personally I find fraternities overall kinda creepy, but I can understand the basic idea behind them.
Just because some of you met some asshole frat guy, doesn't mean they're all terrible.
I'm very pro freedom of speech but they are aligned with the school so they school can do whatever it wants

Bunch of racists have to build a house for people they hate, and some family has to live in a house with the all the associated bad vibes. Everybody loses.
Well, they'll just bro someplace else.
Seriously, frats are the worst. I wish the entire Greek system would just die already. It's a relic from the elitist, racist past, and from what I've seen it's primary products are date rape, alcohol poisoning, sideways sun visors and good ol' boy privilege.
Also, apparently fraternities are extremely slippery.

it's basically a bunch of dudes who pool funds and buy a keg or 3 every saturday night

Your brains will coat the walls when you truly understand how so little people understand so little of the first amendment.
Fraternities vary. not every school or fraternity chapter is that stereotypical "Bro-out, party till you drop"type. The negative stereotypes exist, and it would appear this chapter really falls in line with it. My school, for example, doesn't do fraternity/sorority houses, all organizations are provided with halls in resident buildings that can be painted and customized, as well as chapter rooms. We have a awesome committee that forces us to behave like professional organizations, though parties (no themes though) are allowed. My fraternity experience has been a great one, focused in community service and academics along with having a close bond to a great group of friends. I mean we have our share of parties, but they're always fun and mild. Hell, we even had a Taylor Swift lip dub that was pretty popular last semester (hit a few million views before the copy right claim).
Fraternities are not shitty things and should continue to exist... so long as the chapters are assholes/elitists/racists in their values and practices. Fraternities can focus on positive change in the community and with it's individuals. It's just some fraternities waste their opportunities to do these things so they can focus on partying and being shitty people.
