President Park Geun-hye is to preside on Tuesday over a ceremony at the National Cemetery in Daejeon marking the sinking of the Navy corvette Cheonan in 2010.
Meanwhile, the military is coming up with detailed plans to respond to any North Korean provocations, possibly by launching surgical missile strikes on statues of the North’s nation founder Kim Il-sung and his son Kim Jong-il.
The statues are considered sacred in the North, and any damage to them could deliver a huge psychological impact. "If North Korea launches another provocation, our military has developed a plan to respond with air-to-surface and surface-to-surface missiles to strike not only the source of provocation as well as support and command forces, but also some statues of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il," a government source here said Sunday.
There are some 35,000 statues and other monuments in the North deifying the two Kims, including two huge bronze statues atop Mansudae Hill in Pyongyang. The military has come up with a priority target list with detailed information on their location, size and other characteristics based on satellite photos and other information.
This bit worries me some. They say provocation, not attack or anything.

fairly certain they made it clear what type of provocation
If those statues were destroyed the North would be very, very pissed.
You dirty bastards.
I'd leave at least one for historical value. A small one to put into a museum.
So does this mean North either shuts the fuck up or shit goes down?
If those statues were destroyed the North would be very, very pissed.
then the same day it will be 3 month mourning

Good idea though, destroy their national icons to demoralize them.
North Korean's look to Kim il-Sung, Kim Jong-il and Kim Jong-un as gods (or so they're told).
One of those statues being destroyed would be equilvalent to disturbing a nest of Japanese Giant Hornets.
The North would retaliate.
Destroy the cities, starve millions... but don't you dare touch the statues of our beloved leaders!
I'm pretty sure it would do the exact opposite. They would be rallied, or at least the government would have an excuse to rally its people.

Our it would damage their morale.
The South Korean government have historically been kind of very conservative pricks who used to torture their own citizens for dissidence, nowadays they are somewhat more gentle! These days police only beats people up and the media slanders the left wing (which has been effective too considering how the last left wing president suicided after a thorough denigration, mourners were beaten up by cops).
I'm pretty sure the hostile relations with North Korea benefit them quite alot, for it's how it's been in the past, a little bit of an international crisis helps keep the citizens united, but they have to be careful to not hit the event horizon after which real war is unavoidable.
USA benefits a bit too, I've heard the Cheonan case has postponed South Koreas transition to military self determination which allows USA to keep it's bases in the country. It's also not sure that North Korea was really the reason behind the sinking of Cheonan.
Anyways nothings really sure about the situation but here's just a little counter-propaganda.
Our it would damage their morale.
Eventually, sure. But the first time? Nah the first time they'd be turbo pissed.
jesus, that thing is fucking huge. Kinda cool actually.

Say goodbye to your false idols you commie liberal bastards.
Jesus 2012
Murka ;_;
it's funny though, NK has a lot of statues' bases lined with explosives so they can knock them over for use as tank barriers in the case of an invasion. Not sure if any specifically are Kim Il Sung, but I wonder how many other people are worth immortalizing as giant statues to them?
Aren't the statues filled with dinamite?
EDIT: Ah, already posted.
Man, those motherfuckers know how to make a statue.
lol they bowed to the statue

I was just about to post that. But yeah, I'm not sure which statues they do plan to use as tank traps.

It's mandatory

I seriously wonder how people expect this to work. If you destroy my shit you don't demoralize me, you'll just make me more pissed.
Destroying a statue would be nothing more than disrespect towards the populace, it's an act of hate. There's no advantage whatsoever. It's better to leave those things for the population itself to topple on a brighter day.

If you want to demoralize them just point your missiles at their military hardware. I've yet to see a man convincingly attack a tank with sticks and stones.

They should hire Mattias Nilsson to do it.
Yet another of Korea's silly, empty threats.
