• New Case screwed up my entire computer?!?!

Hello all, I just got a new case and after several hours of trouble shooting and fidiling around I managed to get everything to start up, but when the post screen came up what USED to come up (Pentinum 4 'HT') is now "Pentinum 4" no HT Now when Windows starts up everything is EXTREMELY slow and my computer says I have "1 logical processor" When I used to have 2 of them! wtf? All I did was swap cases, maybe a couple of extra fans and light were added thats it! If I try to run any games or graphics my CPU % skyrockets to 100% as allready is and becomes unusable, what should I do? Re-Install windows? New CPU? ?????? Thanks, J
I don't know why it happened, but looks like Hyper Threading was deactivated. Just reactivate it in the BIOS settings.
If you've reset your bios settings, then that's why HT is turned off.
Hmm thanks, I'll try that asap
I saw the thread name and literally said "What the fuck" outloud. See if everything is plugged in right.
You should get a new computer soon, so that your old case doesn't disown that P4... And yes, HT has been disabled, but it shouldn't affect your PC speed too much; it only gives about 15% extra boost overall, since its not a real core. Re-enabling it in BIOS would fix.
DAMMIT, I should've known it wasn't going to be this easy... I re-enabled it in the BIOS then went along normally to windows boot up, but then half way loading windows the whole PC SHUTS OFF! Same thing in safe mode! My Half-Ass guess is that the extra the fans and LEDs are consuming to much power that it cant support HT? So, should I get a new PSU? I am consuming alot of power on a 340W PSU though, would a 480W make a difference? Thanks, J [editline]12:37AM[/editline] Oh and by the way, the BIOS says the CPU is 88*C idk how hot that is but in C* thats hot, even in F*
340? Well, the fans and LED's, varying on size, might have sapped a lot of power. A 480w would be more than enough.
ok thanks, I'll get back to you in the Mornin'! I'll swap PSU's (by the way Its my B-DAY! :D) Tanks, J

Try unplugging a few fans, see if it boots better. My new case stopped my whole PC working, or so I thought. I was actually a bad cable on my PSU D:
Thanks guys! I fixed it, I just put a new psu in with 480W That fixed the problem! Now I have a kick-ass case with a fast computer :D (BTW, how cheap is thermal paste?) How much do I need and what kind? also, how tight should the heatsink be on the CPU??
This is out of my league. I'm happy my PSU thing helped. Bump too keep this thread going so you'll get advice, man. Cheers.
I wouldn't really say its a fast computer, but whatever floats your boat, man ;) As for the CPU cooler, is it a big block of aluminium fins with INTEL written on it? If it is then you've got an Intel stock cooler which should do the job. It uses Pushpins, which basically just clip in and its done (if you're lucky). Good thermal paste shouldn't cost more than $10. I'd recommend Arctic Silver 5 for a tried and true brand, but there are better ones out there. Google is your friend, remember. Also, 88C is very hot for a Pentium 4, so definately replace the thermal paste or even get a new CPU cooler.
MX-5 :science:
I put some of that Thermal Paste I got from Microcenter, I just slobed some on there and now it works like a charm! Everythung is very fast and seamless, thanks EpikEnvy2.0!
