Apparently some of those key generators work. My mom and I went out and bought Windows 7 for her laptop and when I went in to install it it said the key was invalid, even though the key was the exact same. I already have a new key but I'm just posting this so you know a reason Windows kind of sucks.
This is the very thing I always feared happening to me in CD-Key requiring games. Doesn't help to know it really CAN happen now. :ohdear:

It is interesting, though, that this can happen... I suppose it's best to buy all our software via Digital Downloads now... They already have the authentication integrated into the content. Or at least they did, when I got my $30 University discount on Windows 7.
They wouldn't generate a "wrong" key, did you type it in wrong, was it for a different version, or was it a pirate copy / dodgy store?
More likely you got a box that had been opened and returned but still put back onto the shelf.

He installed it and proceeded to play through the HL2 games and Portal. I then told him he should try TF2. So he started it, set it up and joined a server, when a dialog popped up and said......his key was already in use!
All keys use an algorithm, once it is leaked or generated it's game over.
