If it currently runs Windows 8 and meets the hardware requirements — and you haven’t done anything sneaky like bring it in without a hard drive or a battery — just drop it off by noon and they’ll upgrade it to Windows 10 by the end of the business day. If they miss their self-imposed deadline, they’ll give you a free Inspiron 15 to make up for the inconvenience. Alternatively, if your computer is incompatible with the upgrade, Microsoft will gift you $150 of vouchers towards a new machine.
they obviously won't give you a gaming machine, just a cheap laptop. also you cant do anything to sabotage the windows 10 update process in order to get a free laptop :v: here are the qualifications
You must own the qualifying device. Device must power on Battery must hold a charge and not require being plugged in to operate. The device must be in fully functional, working condition without broken/missing components. A cracked display/housing, liquid damage, modification(s) or broken warranty seals are disqualifiers. Cannot be password protected and must include the device’s original chargers and accessories. The device must contain a hard drive.
That's not a bad deal actually.
If it currently runs Windows 8 and meets the hardware requirements
Damn, can't upgrade my pentium 3 laptop then!
This is probably US only? Shame, we got one computer that can't be upgraded and it'd be cool to upgrade it hardware wise too.
At this point I wouldn't be surprised if someone knocked at my door to ask me if I have heard of our lord and savior, Windows 10. But seriously, the more aggressively MS is trying to grab as large a customer base as possible, the more skeptical I become about their methods of cashing in on their investment in the future. Currently the overall strategy seems to be mimicking Apple while making up for Window's lack of comparable brand appeal with offers like this one, but I guess only time will tell how accurate that speculation actually is.
Oh wow, my laptop is applicable for the upgrade. I got a ancient Windows Millennial Edition which currently runs on Windows 8 (takes 20 minutes to boot though) CPU: Intel Pentium 4 Mobil Processor @ 1.2 GHz RAM: 1GB HDD: 30 GB :v:
if only I didn't destroy my EEE PC's for their drives and they fell under the specs :v: [editline]19th July 2016[/editline] these fuckers can't even run chrome or edge without it crashing
What is so great about win10 that they are treating it this way?
What is so great about win10 that they are treating it this way?
They dont want a windows xp situation where everyone stays on a old dying OS and as a result developers have to support old shit for a few more years than they have to, holding back entire industries like the gaming industry back. thats why Microsoft is doing everything it can to move people over.
Breaking news: Microsoft stock down 72% after Pentium trades in his collection for vouchers.
Fuck, my computer was windows 7 and wouldn't install any under circumstance, had to install windows 10 on a new hard-drive. Oh well.
So with all those disqualifiers, what scenario means you actually get a laptop? They're too backed up with other computers?
I can understand not wanting to have another XP scenario, but this just seems way too generous for MS. Surely they have to be running some sort of loss considering how free everything is atm.
The device must contain a hard drive.
shit they've thought of everything. Is there actually a way for them to give you a laptop?
shit they've thought of everything. Is there actually a way for them to give you a laptop?
My parent's W8 computer had a permissions issue that blocked 10. It was an issue with 8 itself that others had had, took way more than 8 hours to fix it and get 10 on it.

Its all about enterprise, so the Windows 10 giveaway isn't hurting them as much as your would think. They are still making a healthy profit selling enterprise licenses. They are looking at it more of a way to get everyone on a common platform, so they have to opportunity to start selling apps through the Store, as UWP takes over and Win32 support starts winding down (because its 20 years old and unsustainable). Its a lot easier to do this when everyone is running 10, rather than 4 different versions with varying levels of capabilities and support.
I have a Dell laptop that can be upgraded to 8 It takes 30 minutes to get to the 7 desktop I need to find a battery though...
Fuck you Microsoft. I can't even run Windows 7.

The device must contain a hard drive.
shit they've thought of everything. Is there actually a way for them to give you a laptop?
I mean you could just get a cheap tiny laptop drive off of eBay and swap it out. The only way to get the laptop is if they don't install Win10 on it by the end of the day, so... I'm not sure there is a guaranteed way to do that. I guess you could drop off a truckload of computers and they'd never have the time to finish them all?
Fuck you Microsoft. I can't even run Windows 7.
"fuck you guys, I buy computers that don't support modern operating systems"
"fuck you guys, I buy computers that don't support modern operating systems"
I think it was a joke
Does this also apply to desktops? I would never trade mine for a laptop, just curious... [editline]19th July 2016[/editline] Wait, so I could go buy a cheap desktop for 60 bucks with Windows 7 or, 8 or whatever on it, and that isn't compatible with Windows 10 because of a hardware issue, take it to a Microsoft store, and they'll give me a laptop?
I think it was a joke
Look at his the OS he's using. He's using that OS unironically.
Look at his the OS he's using. He's using that OS unironically.
Who cares? It's not like he is complaining about viruses or not being able to run some software
Thanks Microsoft! I love NSA friendly laptops, totally pro-consumer reasoning :D
Flash the UEFI so it rejects their keys, pop in a super slow HDD and get a free laptop.
Goddammit why don't the articles ever mention if its region/country specific.
Thanks Microsoft! So guys, how do we make it so that a computer runs Windows 8 fine but can't install Windows 10? Maybe you can corrupt the BIOS so that it can boot, but bootloader can't be changed so they can't boot into recovery? Asking for a friend.
