We all know that (Here in the UK at least, and possibly the US) adverts for cigarettes or other tobacco products are currently banned completely from being advertised on Radio and TV. Other measures are being taken such as making packets plain brown with graphic health warnings. Smoking is also banned in indoor public areas such as Pubs and restaurants.
But what about alcohol and gambling?
Currently there is no ban on either of these being advertised on TV - Most adverts depict gambling and drinking behaviour in a positive light (Fosters, "Good call"; "It could be you" etc), with only a small warning at the bottom to "Drink responsibly" or a reference to www.gambleaware.com
Why is smoking the only addictive behaviour that is completely banned from being advertised? Gambling and Drinking are equally addictive, and have the potential to be just as damaging - Drinking in particular, in the case of binge drinkers or drunk drivers.
Likewise there is no regulation on the endorsement of this addictive behaviour in public areas - Banning the drinking of alcohol in public areas is unrealistic, but we still see signs advertising offers/sales, and gambling shops are no longer required to have tinted windows. Likewise, fruit machines are regularly on display where children (Who are most susceptible to advertising) will be attracted by flashing lights and noises.
I know that most of Facepunch is rather liberal, in a "Do what you like if it doesn't affect others" way. I am in no way arguing that we should eliminate these addictive behaviours against people's will. But addiction is addiction. It's a serious health problem that, especially in these three cases, can seriously damage, even ruin peoples' lives.
Would it not be sensible, especially with smoking adverts, as I said, being completely banned as it is, to also take measures to prevent or at least restrict the advertising and endorsement of addictive behaviours such as gambling or drinking?
Here in Scotland it's rare to see any advertising for alcohol as well now, or at least I don't see it very often but I agree with the gambling bullshit, shouldn't be advertised right now in times like these when a lot of people are cash strapped and tempting em into gambling there money away just isn't cool.
Besides, i'm fucking sick and tired of every second advert being for some fucking online bingo bullshit :smithicide:

Anyways, I've seen a few tobacco commercials here in americaland. And alcohol can do much more damage than tobacco can. So if tobacco was to be banned from advertising alcohol should also.
