A domestic abuser who forced his partner to learn chess and threatened to kill her if she failed to take a certain piece has been jailed.
Graham O'Shea, 42, "intensively instructed" the woman, police said, before selecting a piece and telling her she "would be leaving in a black box" if it was the last one left.
He also "took control of every aspect" of her life.
O'Shea, of Mixenden, Halifax, was jailed for four years.
He was also given a life-long restraining order against the victim and her family when he was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court on Monday.
West Yorkshire Police said O'Shea was the first person from the county sent to jail under new coercive control laws.
The force said that O'Shea moved in to his victim's home shortly after meeting her in a pub in March .
He refused to let the woman wash herself or visit her family, and gave her an allowance of £10 per week after taking her bank cards.
"He escorted her to and from the bus stop when she went to work and regularly accused her of infidelity," it added.
O'Shea also assaulted his ex on two occasions, police said
The woman contacted police in May after escaping the property and fleeing to her father's house.
The new law was introduced last December.
good fucking riddance on that scum

I'm sorry but, this guy just moves into her house, then confiscates her bank cards and wont allow her to go anywhere by herself, and this all happened in 2 months?
:what:
Letting shitty people move in aside, I would never let someone I literally met a month ago touch my money, let alone let them patronize me with a shitty $12.50 allowance.

I'm assuming you've never been a victim of domestic abuse so it would be hard to understand. People are very easily manipulated.

Fear rules over rationality. She had moved in with him, so she obviously had some kind of emotional attachment to the man. Her stuff probably moved in with her too, so if she wanted to get any of that back she would have to go through him. Sure she could get the police involved, but what if they don't find anything? Then she'll be at the mercy of him and him alone.

Taking a look at his picture in the article, he definitely looks like an intimidating fucker. I'd be scared of going against him as well.

Domestic violence is horrific (obviously), but this one specific detail is pretty goofy.

Welcome to the irrational world of a domestic abuse victim. Of course you wouldn't go along with this stuff, because it's abusive behaviour, but the woman in the context did because she was scared.
Sorry, it just seems like a weird post to make, like saying "I would never let someone rape me", or, "I would never let someone mug me and take my money", well of course you wouldn't.
Not only is this super fucked up and probably super traumatizing just in general due to being forced to do something to save their own life, but it's probably also ruined chess for them forever, which sucks because it's a pretty fun game to play casually with a friend who knows how the game works. Now I doubt she'll ever experience any sort of enjoyment from the game because this'll always be in the back of her mind
How fucked up do you have to be to abuse someone like this
Domestic violence is horrible and this guy is a scumbag who deserves to be in jail.
But, at the same time... Fucking Chess!?
I mean, why!?

My money says a book or a sermon that involves the phrase "DON'T BE A BETA MALE"
There's a novel/movie adaptation that sounds awfully similar.
It's about a chess addict who captures and kills peodophiles, theives, drug dealers, etc.
One day a young guy ends up in the weirdo's house who then keeps him hostage forever unless he could beat him at chess.
It's a good movie. It's in french but there's a subtitled version.

His writing style is very similar to Stephen King, and yes, it's oddly similar to this story.

Sounds a bit horrifying to me. Imagine being at the mercy of a violent sociopath, and having to literally play a game for your life.
