So, i'm still unpacking, and a few days ago the Charter Communications guy came and set up the cable and router. Now today, i'm sitting 1 floor down, and the signal's low. So I go and check, and someone decided to move the router under my bed. No big deal. Until, that is, I go to pick up the router. The thing damn near burns my hand, causing me to drop it.
tl;dr Is is normal for a router to get super hot?
Also, why do cable companies give you shitty networking hardware?
No, its not normal, RMA that thing.
Also, why do cable companies give you shitty networking hardware?
Because shitty hardware is cheaper.
I would, but RMAing a router with a cable company is exactly the kind of shit I don't have time for.

Any suggestions on how to keep it cooler?
Drill holes in the casing for extra airflow?
Shitty airflow + it's under your bed where it will just recycle heat
My router's a rackmount and not so shitty when it comes to heat but it's bad at everything else so...

Always good to have
TBH I really don't know how it got under my bed, but that's what may have caused it to get so hot.
Spend money and buy a GOOD router. Go for linksys. Don't even both with that one if it gets hot enough to burn you.

Oxymoron.
Netgear forever!
Netgear forever!
NETGEAR's drivers are complete fail, don't even bother.
Post speedtest. Charter is fucking horible.
Their modems are shit.

I flashed my linksys router to use linux. I also overclocked it. :colbert:
The brand is.... ubee?
:wtc:
My netgear is a piece of shit. Good router, but the wifi range sucks hard cocks

Don't be too happy. 20 mb/s is with Powerboost. In reality your only getting 8 mb/s.
Oh and our upload speed? Seriously charter? Fuck them.
[editline]09:56AM[/editline]
You got ripped off with the router and wireless all in one. Never ever buy their routers.

Using a pretty decent Linksys e1000, the wireless is great.
Yeah, i know about powerboost, it was exciting for a second.
I don't even think we bought the router, at least I hope not.
[editline]01:09PM[/editline]
Don't forget the 100GB/Month limit on connections 15mbps or lower!
I have 16 mb/s so I think I get 250 gb limit. Oh well.
He cannot buy a new one, if that is what he is talking about in the picture, that's the modem, the cable company needs to replace it. Them and no one else. You cannot buy mainstream ones. Demand that they replace it within a day, you are the customer, don't let them bullshit you around.
Also make sure they give you a modem, not a router/modem combo, so that you can use your own router.

Nevermind don't get it. I read the reviews. It is shit.
I liked AT&T U-Verse's idea.

Had this before we moved, it was awesome except we only ordered 3mbit internet D:
Modem, Wireless Router, Cable gateway all in one. Worked amazingly.

Router Drivers? :raise:
The fuck..?
Router Drivers? :raise:

Maybe he means firmware?
But drivers.... :wtc:
Can't be as bad as Belkin routers :v: Our old one actually fried itself after a year or two of usage. My parents made the clever decision of buying another Belkin router shortly after as they are cheaper :downs:
I will never buy a Belkin ever again. I had Comcast out to my house 7 times, replacing cables under and around the house, and it all boiled down to the shitty Belkin router. :/
Netgear routers have always been rock solid performers, never need rebooted, and have amazing range.
Linksys suck ass with VxWorks firmware, but they run Tomato or DD-WRT.

I had one of these. It broke. I took great fun smashing the shit out of it. BT branded piece of shit.
I hear nothing but bad things about 2wire products.
