• LCD OR LED for gaming?

I was looking for a new TV, and I wanted to know which is better, typically, for gaming. I have an Xbox 360, if that matters.
LED is just an LCD with an LED backlight instead of the typical flourescent. Generally they are more power efficient.

whatever's cheaper
whatever's cheaper
That's not what I asked.
Does that mean less bright? Cause, you know, fuck hippies.
LED backlit TV's are generally as bright, if not brighter than fluorescent backlit ones.
LEDS use less power and often last longer Fuck you for not careing Leds are QUITE bright even brighter depending on the model / maker They are often ALWAYS birghter You can always turn it up too
That's not what I asked.
the difference is next to none in terms of picture quality so get whatever's cheaper
They are pretty similar, LED TVs have higher viewing angles than LCD and are more expensive, but really either one is good.
They are pretty similar, LED TVs have higher viewing angles than LCD and are more expensive, but really either one is good.
Where'd you get that? You're thinking of IPS versus TFT.
Where'd you get that? You're thinking of IPS versus TFT.
No, IPS vs TN. They are both types of TFT.
from what I have read from peoples experience and reviews is that the blacks are deeper and generally the whole monitor itself has a slightly better contrast ratio. Not heard that much about them being brighter though. I've also heard of better color accuracy and more vibrance of the colors too. Haven't owned one yet, or seen one in action, so I can't really say much from my point of view.
No, IPS vs TN. They are both types of TFT.
Knew it was T-something.
-snip- never mind, I didn't read properly, suggested a monitor instead.
Get an IPS screen. More accurate color (LED screens tend to be oversaturated sometimes) and better viewing angles.
Pretty sure most LED backlit TV's are IPS panels :colbert:
Full LED tvs are not just backlit, backlit LED tvs are better than LCDs, but full LEDs have an extremely higher contrast ratio than normal LCDs, which means darker blacks and lighter lights. And they are more power efficient. Also the viewing angles on LEd tvs are a lot wider than standard LCDs.. It's all down to personal preference of how much you wanna spend, just go to some electronics department and have a look at the different tvs yourself. You will notice anything wether full LED or backlit LED are better but more pricey than plain LCDs.
I would get a plasma, yea they have some burn in but the new ones its really hard to burn in and its easy to remove, playing 5 hours with a hud on the screen will leave a trace from it but nothing the white screen thing wont get rid of. Plasmas also have a better color and darker blacks.
They also cost ~40% more.
Plasmas are not 40% more.
Does that mean less bright? Cause, you know, fuck hippies.
no, it's brighter and more cost effective, something one would expect a republican to be in favor of. then again you think LED and LCD are different things so maybe you're just a little boxy [editline]4th December 2010[/editline]
They also cost ~40% more.
actually plasmas are rapidly going out of fashion and they're now the same price if not less than an LCD. however the color is fucked, you'll never not have visible fuzz on solid color, and they still produce heat like a mother fucker. oh and burn in is still very much present, it's an effect from the technology, to not have burn in would be to not have plasma. [editline]4th December 2010[/editline] the contrast is honestly the only thing plasma has going for it

Similar technology inside. (User was banned for this post ("Dumb Boxxy post" - Benji))
On-topic: I don't there is a difference between LCD and LED backlit TVs, besides color and brightness. Similar technology inside.
to reiterate for the 15th time, the LED TVs OP is referring to are still LCD. the only similar technology is the LCD portion, which is just the matrix of triads forming the pixels and display itself. LCD displays are not self lit, mind you, they must be backlit or in some cases frontlit. well they don't have to be but it really helps, and thus all LCD TVs, monitors, cell phone displays, portable game displays, everything is backlit. LED backlit LCD typically looks better than the typical fluorescent lighting. seeing as most LCDs rely on dynamic contrast to make them look "good", LED is better because it's much more responsive and instant, whereas fluorescent has to sort of warm up and cool down. the special LED backlit LCD displays use a technology called local dimming, where basically only the parts that need to be backlit will be backlit. of course there is a downside to that as they usually have bleeding light CCFL(traditional fluorescent) vs local dimming LED, this is just showing backlighting. do note, however, that a non locally dimming LED backlight will have the same solid lighting as a CCFL does, just brighter and more responsive if you have dynamic contrast on and then here's showing the bleeding light, or halo as most people refer to them, the one on the left is without local dimming, the one on the right is [editline]4th December 2010[/editline]
LED. Calm yourself son [editline]5th December 2010[/editline] Will you be happier if I said CCFL vs LED?
OH one thing i forgot, the REALLY REALLY fancy LED LCD TVs, which Sony had on the market for a series but they looked weird so they took it back to the drawing board, it's not quite perfected yet, is RGB LED backlighting. also incorporating local dimming, they'll use multi-color LEDs so that it's like the image is being lit up by, well, the image. once it's perfected and they're using enough tiny little LEDs, it's believed that it should actually rival and look just as good as OLED, because large OLED displays are going to continue to be too expensive to manufacturer for about another 3 years or so. once OLED stops being retardedly expensive and they can actually make drastic changes to it to make improvements, it's going to be amazing [editline]4th December 2010[/editline] but right now it's so expensive that they're really careful with what they do, don't want to fuck up a batch and be down fifty grand or so. oh and i think the largest they've done with it is 13"? not sure, something quite small

As far as I know, the display technology isn't that different... which is what I said.
This makes me think of those Sony TV's a while ago that had dynamic mood lighting. There were lights on the back and sides of the TV that would adjust their color to the average(I think?) color of the current image. It was fairly impressive, actually, and worked pretty well. But they discontinued it for some reason. I actually did this manually in Crysis, changing my case fan lights' color to match the level. I even toyed with a program that would analyze the current colors on the screen and output an RGB value. It was too unreliable, being thrown off by HUD's and the like. I'd have needed to add deadzones and I was just too lazy and trashed it. It was pretty interesting, though, and relatively simple. Maybe someone can do something with it.
