Very descriptive thread title I have created. I'll just give a quick rundown, from Wikipedia:
A screensaver (or screen saver) is a computer program that blanks the screen or fills it with moving images or patterns when the computer is not in use. Initially designed to prevent phosphor burn-in on CRT and plasma computer monitors (hence the name), screensavers are now used primarily for entertainment, security or to display system status information.
Historically, as the wikipedia link suggests, they were used to prevent burn-in on certain monitors that were susceptable to burn in. So, for example, if I leave some nice gay porn on your CRT for a week, you'd then have an image of a twink taking a massive black phallus burnt into your screen forever Most people don't use them anymore, most screens just blank and are awoken to a lock screen, however, I stumbled across the xscreensaver package which comes with 200 screensavers that are pretty neat. So I thought I'd make a thread here are some of my favourites: the classic johnny castaway, from the glorious 16 bit era. Sadly that 16 bit means you can't really run it on modern windows. and of course, the maze screensaver. In the xscreensaver package is the unknown pleasure screensaver which I like a lot, it's literally just an animated version of that album cover. I couldn't find a video of it though. For you gnu/linux users xscreensaver usually ships with your version of xorg so you should be able to just type xscreensaver-demo into your favourite terminal to take a look.

i like 3d pipes
well i use the hal 9000 screensavers from the hal project, but it looks like he recently had a takedown issued against him so they all disappeared from the internet
