Despite the free availability of substances as pleasurable as already banned drugs, we have not seen a massive increase in problem users and drug mortality rates have been falling. Furthermore, even with the newly introduced "instant bans", drug laws are simply not able to keep up.
Currently, it is barely possible to detect new drugs at the rate they appear. It has long been clear that the drug war approach of criminalising possession rather than treating problem drug-users has been futile. The revolution in the recreational drug market is a stark reminder of this reality. The war on drugs has not been lost, it has been made obsolete.
Honestly it was pretty obvious how obsolete the current methods were when Portugal decriminalised all drugs and started offering treatment for addicts who wanted it.
The war on drugs is a complete and utter failure? Well, I sure havent seen like 50 other articles on the subject already. But will it make politicians change their retarded views? Not really, it's sad.

Western civilisation will collpase, Apes will break free from their zoos and we'll no longer be the dominant species! Humanity will crumble and it's all because of that ching, gear and weed! They're the Devils tools I say!
You've honestly got to wonder what the minds of those people are actually like? Are they still terrified of Russia and shit or are they just mildly special?

I think it more comes down to different interpretations and expectations for the future of drugs. Like, we think legalizing drugs would be good, but they obviously think it'd cause a myriad of issues. and just like any other political social issue, people don't agree on the method of control.
Here's the thing about the war on drugs. If you stop, then it means two things.
First it means admitting that you were wrong. You were wrong to start it, you were wrong to continue it, and you were wrong to support it all this time.
Second is that it means that all of the time and money and effort you put into it was pointless. It means that you achieved nothing.
Of course, particularly the first, is something that people don't like to do. The second one even less so. It applies to any argument, really. People don't like saying that they're wrong, they'll stick to an obviously destructive path or losing argument just because of it.
But here, it's particularly bad because it means that they have to admit that the hundreds of billions of dollars spent on it were wasted, and that for every year that it's been running, they were absolutely wrong and they were stupid for trying.
To avoid having to admit that, the only possible option is to keep it going. Never make it stop. Because if it's not over, you can't admit that you lost and that you were wrong. And it'll keep going and going and going until you can convince the American government, the government that set itself up a suicide button and said "if we don't cooperate and do something smart we are going to shoot ourselves in the head and screw over everyone", dangled themselves over a bottomless economic pit, and still couldn't do anything and shot themselves in the head quite happily. You have to convince those people to admit that they were wrong on a massive scale.
So, do I think that the war on drugs is going to end in time soon? No. It'll be a few more years before it's even a possibility. Hopefully I'm proven wrong.

It's because old, backwards people are still in charge who won't listen to facts or reason
I think with the recent advances with recreational marijuana laws finally being passed in two states, federal legislation (or at least every state) will sweep the nation in the next decade or so. But other drugs have a long way to go, I think.

The Private prison industry, Tobacco industry and irrational conservative views make this true.
Oh yay, hoodoo456 is rating everyone dumb he doesn't agree with, but never bothers to respond and tell us why he thinks our opinions are dumb

Implying ratings mean anything.

One of the worst things to privatize is the prison industry.
Along with the healthcare sector.

I know they really don't mean shit, but still, why rate everyone dumb and not even bother to say why you think this article and what people are saying is dumb?

to be replaced by old farts
Honestly it was pretty obvious how obsolete the current methods were when Portugal decriminalised all drugs and started offering treatment for addicts who wanted it.
drugs are a health problem, not a criminal problem. the war on drugs takes the poor and frustrated and creates criminals out of them.
to be replaced by old farts
Well duh but new old farts are from a different time, obviously, so they are going to progressively get better and better, hopefully.

Indeed, you seen that docu-movie 'The House I Live In'? It's a war on the "dangerous" classes.

I think we'll be okay, we'll see. This is one of the least certain things, as to whether we as a generation can lead worth fuck. I hope we, and the generations a bit before us, can, because otherwise we're going to be so sad.

My dad says they said the exact same thing when he was young. Now he thinks governments getting worse.

Well society is completely different now at least, technology is a real game changer perhaps.
I don't think the whole 'war' on drugs has been made redundant, simply because of how fast the drug makers can create new drugs before new laws can come out. The drug war has made some good contributions. However, I'm not sure if the cost of it is worth. So far, since 2009, $31 Billion has been spent on combating the war on drugs, while only $10.7 Billion has been spent on education and substance abuse programs. Obama's new plan is to focus more on the education part and treatment, so hopefully that will help stop drug addiction before it even starts.
That doesn't mean we should legalize all drugs immediately, but in this case, maybe more testing and inspection before releasing some of these chemicals for free sale.

The majority of illegal drugs have been tested and studied to high hell to try and justify the reasons they're illegal.
Illegalizing any drug doesn't really do a lot of good for anyone and doesn't really mean anything.
