If anything it sounds more like Wurm than Minecraft for all the comparisons in this article.
The stuff such as upkeep is to keep the world alive and avoid the problems that minecraft and rust have where someone builds something logs off any never plays again. If you stop playing and don't pay the upkeep (with resources) you don't lose your stuff they make a template of your claim then put all your stuff into your inventory give you back your claim flag and reset the land for other active players. If you start playing again you still have your stuff and even a template you can use to plonk it back down again anywhere you like the only thing you lose is your spot and if nobody has claimed it yet you can go take it back. Many of the things in place such as where you find resources and the small amount of islands are for testing purposes to stress test and find bugs. When they are happy they will increase the amount of servers and islands and put resources where you would expect to find them such as iron near mountains and stuff. And it almost seems like they are complaining at the fact you have to go get resources to build your building rather than having unlimited resources that would be silly. I will say right now some of the crafting ratios aren't great but they said they will change all that stuff to how players want it.
